I imagine if it did happen it would be where you first played rather than where you were born.

You'd have to think so, but it would certainly be interesting to see what they defined as "Origin" - of the listed David Pocock, James O'Connor, Rocky Elsom and Stephen Moore, only one was born in Q'ld.

I'd rather see the force in action.

I know this and I'm jealous. I hate living in a state that is so pre occupied with such a rediculous and pathetic excuse for a sport.

Even you'd admit though if there was a game on between the Broncos in Qld the same weekend this other clash would happen 90% of Qld be at the mungo game.

WA is catching up fast with support. The worse thing that ever happened here was when the vfl expanded to that gayfl comp. I believe if things were how it used to be then Union would have a good chance of taking over as the No1 sport here.

It should be just that: "Origin". They can't have it both ways!

Probably not, the WAFL would still be getting massive support if the VFL never went national

It's hard to say really, the game really took off when it went national.

The game has always been popular in Victoria but WAFL games were always well attended events as well unless you go back to

    Pre 1900
Organised football in the Perth/Fremantle region of Western Australia dates back to 1881. Back then though rugby union was the dominant football code, with only one senior club, "Unions", playing Australian Rules.

Yeah I meant it really took off here when it became the afl. It was always a popular sport here but I think we (union fans) would have had a better chance if it was still the wafl we were competing against and not the cashed up afl.

Union the dominant football code, I'd like to see that here. Why oh why can't we be like the boks, kiwis and that other magnificent country?

Australian Rules Football was already popular here though, the WAFL was a very well supported State competition, several WAFL clubs actually looked to join the VFL themselves, mainly to stop West Australian players freom going East to clubs in the VFL. West Coast Eagles only came along as the WAFC still wanted a say in what would happen should a team in WA join the VFL.

AFL has been dominant code in WA for a long time and probably will continue to be, but the priorities of the supporters merely changed from WAFL to AFL. If there was no national competiton for AFL you would be dealing with an even more cashed up WAFC

Good point, we've spent way to much time talking about it already.

    Couldn't put it better myself-

(Slight caveat here) except to say in some cases it seems to be nationality of parents origin/ nationality of where parents moved to when kid was old enough to play seniors...

    For state of origin I would restrict it to birthright Reds and Waratahs;
its all academic there are probably valid arguments for all of the complex place of birth/ place of antecedants birth/ born in a ute on Boundary St Tweed Heads etc.
