I did not know (but now I do!) that the acre is an area of length 1 furlong and a width of 1 chain. The Old English word "acre" means field and it was generally considered the area that could be ploughed in a day using a yoke or oxen. There are exactly 640 acres in a square mile. It is unusual in that it is not a measure of a square but a rectangle, even though most people in agriculture, including myself, use the unit regularly and conceptualize a square area.

I did not know (but now I do!) is that the word barracking ( as in barracking for your team) came from when soldiers at Victoria Barracks would stand on the roof of their barracks and cheer for their teams playing nearby at the Garrisson Ground which was later to become the Sydney Cricket Ground.

... hmm that means the origin of the saying " thinking outside of the square" came from lack of understanding of what an acre was...

That must be the same chain that was used to measure the length between the wickets in cricket. And the furlong of course is ten chains in length.

I did not know (but now I do) that Henry Lawson became partially deaf from an ear infection when he was around ten and was totally deaf from age fourteen!
Will be interesting reading any of his works now and seeing references to noise.

I did not know (but now I do) that Onion is Latin for “large pearl.” A basket of onions was considered a respectable funeral offering in ancient Egypt, second only to a basket of bread. Onions, with their circular layers, represented eternity and were found in the eyes of King Ramses IV who died in 1160 B.C

........and that flatus is also derived from the latin for blowing or blast and describes the effect that those large pearls can have. Hence the saying "Jeez that was a pearler".

....and to have an afflatus is to have a sudden powerful inspiration or insight, out of the blue. Usually, a pearler of an idea can be traced back to an afflatus or an afflatulent moment.

Nature just continues to throw up some amazing stuff. That fish looks like something out of Lonzy's hologram theory.
