Scott Staniforth moves to Force centre against BullsArticle from: PerthNowFont size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment Rugby writer Nick Taylor

    April 03, 2008 12:00pm
THE Western Force have made a late change to the side to face reigning Super 14 champions the Bulls at Subiaco Oval tomorrow night.

Centre Lachlan MacKay was not 100 per cent fit after Tuesday night's training session and the hard-running Scott Staniforth has moved in from the wing.

The centre spot is tough-tackling Staniforth's preferred position and will certainly give the Force a potent attacking weapon.

Nick Cummins moves to the right wing and former Hale Schoolboy, 19-year-old Dane Haylett-Petty, gets his first chance with the Force, covering wing and fullback from the bench.

Coach John Mitchell said MacKay, who has been troubled with injuries since joining the Force, was only 85 per cent fit.

"He pulled up a bit tight so we don't want to risk it,'' Mitchell said.

"Scott has always wanted to go there (inside centre) and he's been fantastic for the team in the fact that he's been contributing from wing.

"At time's we've wanted to get him to centre this year, but we've actually put out our most experienced group.

"He brings a lot of experience to this team.''

Captain Nathan Sharpe said the four wins from 15 home games was not a record the side had liked to accumulate and dismissed talk of a hoodoo.

"The fact of the matter is we've had two home games here this year,'' he said.

"One we performed well in, unfortunately we didn't finish the game off, against the Crusaders.

"The other one I think we suffered a little bit from taking the foot of the pedal after a good tour to New Zealand.''

Sharpe said the Bulls were 'starting to come good'

"Watching the South African teams on tour, it seems to have galvanised their teams and they are certainly finishing very strongly,

    "It's a good litmus test for us.'`

He said players had been stung by the defeat against the Stormers, which was a good sign, and there had been a good mental application to training.

"You hope you don't have to go through a season and have one of those performances, but in hindsight it might be a good thing for us because its certainly a wakeup call,'' he said.

"I think the guys just got a bit relaxed and that has not been the attitude we took into the first six games of the season.''

All the players were disappointed with their performance against the Stormers.

"That's the best way forward for us. What you want is guys that are stung from a bad performance to come out and take accountability and play well.''

Mitchell also said that players attitude was poor last week.

"It's a matter of getting our top four inches right and getting into tomorrow night.

"The Bulls are Super 14 champions that have run into some good form, they've got a lot of experienced players. You've got to respect that.

"I'm sure what they saw last week during our performance will whet their appetite and make them pretty hungry, but last week's irrelevant for everyone - you just deal with what you're about to confront."
