Back in December, I email to the newly appointed Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie from Victoria. I received a letter back today, thanking me for my email and saying Super Rugby was a professional competition administrated by SANZAAR, which did not receive funding directly from the government.
She closed with the words "The government will consider all recommendations made by the Senate Community Affairs Reference Committee Report and officially respond to the Report in due course."
Umm .... at best that response is disingenuous and is arguably deceitful, given both the ARU and Rebels are direct beneficiaries of Vic government largesse.
The government is supposed to respond within three months of the publication of a Senate Inquiry report, but rarely does!
Last weekend I wrote (by email) to all of the organisations about whom the Senate Inquiry made recommendations (ARU, ASIC and ASC) asking for an update. I have yet to receive any substantive responses from any of them. I'll let you know when/if I do.
Proudly Western Australian; Proudly supporting Western Australian rugby
She is the federal minister, but is from Victoria.
Below is my email
Hi Senator Mckenzie,
Firstly, my congratulations on your appointment as Minister for Sport.
I hope you will find time to read the evidence presented, and the recommendations of the recent Senate Inquiry into the Future of Rugby in Australia.
https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary...byunion/Report
Please take particular note of:
4.29 The committee recommends that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission review the evidence received by the committee regarding transactions involving the Melbourne Rebels.
4.30 The committee recommends the Australian Securities and Investments Commission review the financial circumstances reported in the Australian Rugby Union's annual reports against the evidence presented to the committee.
I am sure your colleague in the Coalition, Senator Linda Reynolds would be happy to share her thoughts on Rugby in Australia with you.
Good luck in the new position.
Regards
OK, my bad. Her comment is reasonable. I should read twice and post once, even if that would be unusual on the interwebs
Yet the Senate Inquiry noted that:Rugby Australia receives more than $1.8 million in federal funding every year (Australian Sports Commission, Annual Report 2015-16, p. 138 - $1 889 090; Australian Sports Commission, Annual Report 2014-15, p. 190 - $2 290 850; Australian Sports Commission, Annual Report 2013-14, p. 176 - $2 665 113)
The truth may set you free, but only evidence convicts
A response would be that SANZAAR is a governing organisation based in Australia Sydney to be precise that a Federal and State Government funded body is a member of. SANZAAR has to follow governance regulations as an Australian based organisation and any financial irregularities should be referred to ASIC and/or the ATO.
As a result the RA and due to reciprocal agreements with the NZ Government the NZRU who are also a member of SANZAAR cannot use this organisation as an excuse to make financial arrangements that are outside the legal boundaries and/or outside their roles of custodians of a national sporting organisation.
The Senate Inquiry in to Australian Soccer and Government lead inquires into national sporting organisations which Rugby has already received are reasons why this needs to be addressed before it consumes more time and energy.

Tbf the previous Sports Minister Greg Hunt who is also from Victoria is in favour of the Inquiry. McKenzie is a National and upsetting the applecart by going against the Libs won't work in State and Federal Politics in Victoria. It is very difficult to win a state election in Vic without the country votes. The Nats and Libs have split previously in Victoria. Complete disaster it was.Umm .... at best that response is disingenuous and is arguably deceitful, given both the ARU and Rebels are direct beneficiaries of Vic government largesse.
Does that include ASADA/WADA drug testing and Olympic/Commonwealth Games funding? The next report will be interesting as the new shiny HQ didn't exactly pay for itself.

At least they got a spreadsheet - "CBA slammed for handing meaningless spreadsheets to royal commission" https://www.smh.com.au/business/bank...13-p4z44b.html
Mr Orr said NAB had also “failed to provide comprehensive information” in some areas, but the bank had detailed several instances of misconduct particularly in relation to its home loan introducer program.
NAB’s home loan ‘introducer program’, which rewarded people for referring home loan clients, is the first area under the royal commission's microscope. Two senior NAB executives will be called to give evidence on Tuesday.

Mr Clyne, who led NAB while it attempted to chase market share by undercutting its big four rivals on mortgage interest rates, said Whitecoat's pro-consumer stance was a key attraction.
"I've always been very interested in competition, and certainly when I was involved in banking that's something I tried to drive as much as possible," Mr Clyne said in an interview with BusinessDay.

Has he been hauled into the Royal Commission? Hope so!
He wasn't on this week's witness sheet.
They are looking for public submissions so if any of you were pissed off with the NAB's service while he was CEO fill your boots
