No there were a number of applicants, as I posted in another thread, I was told by a Board Member ( who is from your Club, Mr Gunfighter ) on Community Rugby semi final day, that we are not going to get a name Coach, and that both Lancaster and Meyer applied and were told they were unsuccessful, and the only positive was that the " new " Coach would be more engaged with Community Rugby. My comment to him was " you'll be lucky to get 4 to 5 thousand people at NIB next season ", as people want a name Coach who will attract name players. Another comment was posted about Paly's Coach, Donny Stevenson, who Coached Northland in the NZ NPC and also Coached NZ Maori, he's far more experienced than Wessels, whether he applied I don't know. All Wessels has done has taken a Club side as an Assistant Coach in Cape Town to a Premiership, not a ringing endorsement to be a Super Rugby Coach. Unfortunately I can see the Force being relocated to Gosford in 2022.
Rock and a hard place, and one of the many reasons why having the ARU owning and running a club simply doesn't work. Don't support the direction taken and they have the excuse they need to wrap up the team, continue to support regardless and they have empiric proof that they can do as they wish without consequence.
As noted when they went down this path, WA no longer has any influence on the future of the Force. Nothing we do really matters, we can only go along for the ride and judge them by their actions. Because when all is said and done, what is said is meaningless compared to what is done.
Japan and the Pacific Islands for Aussie Super 9's!
Let's have one of these in WA! Click this link: Saitama Super Arena - New Perth Stadium?
Also what about the fact that as soon as foley was out and hodgson away injured that the players ran amok in South Africa with wessells in charge. Gives the impression that the players don't respect him or he has no control. Would have thought those events would have counted against him
We need fresh ideas and fresh start. Appointing the guy who was assistant coach to the pile of crap we dished up last season is beyond belief. We need a experienced coach not someone who is wet behind the ears. Foley was a unambitious appointment, taking a coach that had just been sacked by a rival and if Wessels gets appointed this will be no different. The club should be showing it supporters that it has ambition and making a appointment that will get people coming through the gates.
The Force will remain alive and in WA until the end of the current TV deal.
In that time both we as supporters, Rugby WA and The Western Force themselves (regardless of who is in charge) need to ensure that the Force is such a success that to shut them down would be madness.
There are several ways that this can happen.
1) Success on the field.
2) Success in the support base (number of members, money coming in, attendance at games.)
3) A pathway for future Wallabies.
With all of these things it has to be said that mediocrity will not suffice. It needs to be success. 1) Playing in finals, 2) 15,000 or more members with more attending games and 3) Local players getting into the Wallabies.
In all of these things the only one that has improved since the Force started is the last. I think that everyone should be applauded for getting players like Coleman, Haylet Petty, Morahan, etc. into the Wallabies. This is where the Western Force, more than any other area, has shown it's worth.
We, as supporters, have no control over 1 or 3 but we have a big say in 2.
The Western Force supporters have shown their loyalty, support and fanaticism over the years until we have a great reputation all over Australia.
Now is not the time to lose that. Not if you want the team to continue.
They have my support but I find it a bit depressing that they might appoint a coach who has been there for the dire two seasons we have just had!! It doesn't seem very smart to me but what do I know I just love rugby.. I'm hanging on to a small hope we will all be pleasantly surprised.,
Lancaster has just been named as a senior coach at Leinster.
Proudly Western Australian; Proudly supporting Western Australian rugby
From International coach to a defence coach
The West
I think we did well to avoid him.
Still have to wait to see who we get
Simon Cron: “People talk about winning and losing all the time and they are critical, but there’s a process to get into and it’s the ability to stay present, do your job and execute skills under pressure.”
