Mitchell learns to love wing
January 25, 2008
AUSTRALIA speed machine Drew Mitchell's record-breaking World Cup has triggered his switch from fullback to the wing for the 2008 Super 14.
Mitchell has swapped with good mate Cameron Shepherd in the Western Force backline and is hoping the move continues his try-spree and helps cement a Test berth.
The 23-year-old crossed seven times in four pool matches as a winger in the World Cup in France, breaking David Campese's 16-year Wallabies record, in a performance that changed his mind about the position.
Previously a reluctant winger after playing all his junior and club rugby at fullback, Mitchell said he now felt at home out wide and would savour the extra attacking chances.
"The World Cup gave me a huge amount of confidence in terms of my play on the wing and what I'm capable of doing if I put myself in those positions," Mitchell said.
"When you're playing a good brand of rugby, being a winger is quite appealing.
"If your forward pack and backline are creating opportunities for you to finish them then that is quite exciting."
Force coach John Mitchell was heavily criticised for playing the former Queenslander at fullback last year, especially when he delivered a first-up shocker in his Force debut, while Shepherd was in sublime form.
Mitchell's switch with Shepherd, a more natural fullback, at the Force will undoubtedly help both with their Test hopes.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
It's good to see that Drew has decided to make the switch from Fullback to wing, rather than him conceding that it's play wing or sit on the bench.
I really don't think Mitch is big on being told who to play where, I mean really how many people told him to Play Drew at 11 last year? Did he listen? no!

I think at last they have their rightfull positions, as always it takes backs longer to make up their minds.
And less time to score a try!
