Federal Sports Minister George Brandis says the people of Western Australia deserve a new sports stadium.
Mr Brandis yesterday visited the three sites earmarked for a new sports stadium: the old East Perth power station, Kitchener Park and Subiaco Oval.
He says his visit to Perth was to gather information to help decide whether the Commonwealth will contribute towards the cost of the stadium.
"We haven't made any decision about this," he said.
"The purpose of my visit was to inform myself better, basically an information gathering exercise."
Mr Brandis concedes Perth deserves something better.
"Subiaco Oval, for a city the size of Perth, is plainly less than the people are entitled to hope for," he said.
"It compares unfavourably with the SCG, the MCG or the Gabba. This has to be done, but it has to be done by the State Government.
"Whether or not the Commonwealth is able to make a contribution to that is something we'll have to look at."
