Speaking on the eve of Anzac Day, Cosgrove revealed he had played in a trans-Tasman match that would have put last year's brutal Eden Park Test to shame.
"It was in Nui Dat, in Vietnam, in 1969," he said.
"I was in 9RAR and we played the NZ Artillery in a death struggle on a ratty, knocked-down field which was actually a helicopter landing zone.
"None of us had any football kit so we played in an odd assortment of green shorts, green shirts and ratty old rubber jungle boots, and I have never seen such carnage.
"But we won."
