Well let's hope so. But Bakkies' questions are valid. He's a specialist 15 in an era of "outside backs" . So I suppose his positional awareness, dependability under the high ball, his defensive organization and lethal boot will be a foundation of the 2021 game plans. I'd back the coaches to adapt those strengths to SR

I don't think we have the squad to run it from anywhere. We'll have a strong set piece and experience at 9, 10, 12, 13 and 15. Good kicking I hope too. I am hoping Kearney will help us play the smart, ruthlessly efficient game Ireland were renowned for prior to the World Cup.

I'm actually hoping that Kearney spends most of his time mentoring young jack.

Jack has awesome potential but is green and has obviously suffered through lack of coaching in his early career. If Rob can instil some of the class that he always played with into a young bloke with all the skills bakkies was suggesting that Rob doesn't have I suspect jack will light it up.

Kearney played on the wing for a while under Cheika at Leinster. Didn’t take him long to become a Lion after moving to fullback.

He has positional/kick chase skills most of our back three players don’t have and you noticed the difference when he was out injured for Ireland.

He can long range place kick as well.

Probably due to the physicality of the European game he didn’t develop his footwork and pace. Not many Irish players of his era had sidesteps of note.

Western Force hope to snare young Queensland hooker Jack Winchester to replace Argentinian Julian Montoya

Western Force expect to sign junior Wallabies squad member and Queensland Reds academy hooker Jack Winchester as a replacement for Argentinian Julian Montoya.

It is understood Montoya’s wife has had visa problems that prevented him joining the Force for the Australia Super Rugby and trans-Tasman competitions.

The Force said in a statement: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Julián Montoya will not be travelling to Australia.”

Winchester was a 2018 winner of the prestigious John Eales Rugby Excellence Scholarship at Bond University.

He played for the Australian School Barbarians in 2017 against a Fiji schoolboys side.

Bond University posted on Facebook: “Congratulations Jack Winchester on your recent Super Rugby signing with the Western Force. Wishing you all the best over there in Western Australia.”

    MORE WESTERN FORCE:
Legendary Ireland full-back Rob Kearney was last in Perth nearly eight years ago when the British and Irish Lions kicked off their Australian tour with a big win over the Western Force.

Now he is back, wearing the blue Force jumper.

“It’s been a bit of a long wait. Eight years on I’m back. I would never have thought it,” Kearney said.

He ended a 15-year career with Leinster in September, didn’t think twice when offered the chance to join the Force and met his new teammates today after 14 days’ quarantine in Brisbane.

Kearney is one of a handful of overseas players joining the Force for the Australian Super Rugby and trans-Tasman competitions.

The 2012 European player of the year has a 12-year international career that includes four Six Nations wins, including the 2009 and 2018 grand slam titles, three World Cup campaigns and two Lions tours.

“I suppose what I bring off the field is as important as what I bring on it,” said Kearney, who made 219 appearances for Leinster.

“You’ve got a lot of young guys here who need to and want to develop their game.

“I’m very lucky that I’ve come from teams and cultures where we’ve won a lot of trophies and silverware.

“Hopefully I can incorporate some of that winning mindset and what it takes to be a real high performance team.

“I’m looking forward to challenging myself to a different type of game.

“The climate allows the game to be quicker. There’s a lot more emphasis on attacking rugby.

“The game is evolving. As a group we have to be smart and make sure we are evolving with the changes.”

Aity about missing out on Montoya, but Winchester looks like a great get & its good to have another newbie to develop & grow with the squad.

2022. Montoya is a real blow. Our set piece will still go OK but with he and Pedrano probably starting was shaping as a lethal weapon.

Argentine Montoya backs out of Force deal

    Justin Chadwick
    AAP
    Thu, 14 January 2021 9:13AM

Argentina hooker Julian Montoya has pulled the pin on his deal to join the Western Force.

The Western Force's Argentine contingent has been cut by one after star hooker Julian Montoya was forced to renege on his contract.

Montoya had signed a short-term deal with the Force to play in the Super Rugby AU and the new trans-Tasman competition this year, but there was a visa issue with getting his family to Australia.

The 27-year-old has now linked up with English Premiership outfit Leicester Tigers instead.

The 63-Test veteran had already committed to joining the Tigers for their 2021-22 Premiership campaign but he has been able to link up with them early after opting out of his Force deal.

Montoya was the starting hooker in Argentina's historic 25-15 win over the All Blacks in Sydney, laying a series of big tackles to help set the platform for victory.

His signing by the Force was considered a major coup, but the Perth-based franchise will still have plenty of Argentine flavour this year in the form of Tomas Cubelli, Tomas Lezana, Santiago Medrano and Domingo Miotti.

Legendary Irish fullback Rob Kearney has also joined the revamped Force, along with Wallabies duo Tevita Kuridrani and Tom Robertson.

Former All Blacks duo Richard Kahui and Jeremy Thrush have re-signed from last year, meaning the Force will boast plenty of international experience in 2021.

I assume that it's only for the SR & TT games in 2021 as the Bond Uni announcement mentions "looking forward to his return in July 2021".

My thoughts too, it's a shame we couldn't have kept him as that would have send the Queenslanders into orbit...

That's a bit quick, considering the issue was his supposed to be his wife's visa. Mind you, I hear that the English Premier League finances are a bit shaky, so maybe he has had to take a pay cut to head to Covid Island.

Although the details in the story aren't incredibly clear it sounds like he signed a 1 year with the Force, then signed for Leicester then couldn't sort out Mrs visa, there's every chance he isn't taking the piss and is just taking the option which allows him to play rugby.

There's also a good chance Mrs was refused entry to WA simply because of Mark McGowan's COVID response strategy of refusing access to everybody he can get away with.
