An interesting thing happened at the UWA versus Wests game last Saturday.
.
It seems UWA made a great start, piling on points, and were about 20 points ahead, coasting towards a win.
The scoreboard showed the Uni score with a 30 in it and the Wests with a 9.
Then Wests woke up, and went on a spree of their own, grinding ever closer to Uni. You could cut the tension with a knife.
Suddenly the board showed only 2 points in it with Wests ahead 32 - 30 and seconds to go.
The referee gave Uni a penalty within range. The kick was true, and the scoreboard immediately showed 33 to 32 in Uni's favour.
Pandemonium broke loose. Uni players were kissing and hugging, and their crowd was deliriously engaged in a back slapping frenzy.
The Uni song was sung with an unparalleled gusto of derision.
Wests players sat unbelieving, dejected and forlorn on the ground.
Anyway, the game was over. It was what it was. The West crowd went home, except for the few officials and players who stayed on for appearances sake, and the Uni crowd celebrated into the evening light, not wisely but too well, until quiet was demanded for the making of an announcement.
The expectant crowd of Uni triumphants, an hour after the game, heard words to the following effect.
"There's been an error on the scoreboard. The referee [Cooper] has just advised that a conversion by Wests was not included in the score. West's actually won by a point."
