Indigenous Appreciation Match gets boots boost
May 27, 2019
The Western Force will hold an Indigenous Appreciation match against Kagifa Samoa this Friday, 31 May, with a number of players to wear hand-painted boots which will be donated following the game to raise funds for the Earbus Foundation.
Thanks to the help of the wonderful students at Guildford Grammar School’s Indigenous Program, each pair of boots have been painted to represent the unique stories of the students and the Western Force players.
Western Force captain Ian Prior said the club is proud to recognise the contribution of Indigenous cultures in rugby, as well as the wider community. Prior said the opportunity to work collaboratively alongside the very talented students at Guildford was a special experience.
“Throughout my rugby journey, I have had the great pleasure to have teammates from many Indigenous cultures from across the globe, as well as at home here in Australia. As a club we are proud to be able to recognise and support the contributions of Indigenous peoples, including Western Australia’s Aboriginal people,” Prior said.
“The students at Guildford were so passionate and wonderfully talented which you can see in the fantastic artwork they created using our boots. The end results are almost too good to wear again, but they will make an amazing statement on the field when we play on Friday night, and ultimately, I hope, raise plenty of funds to support the incredible work of the Earbus Foundation.”
Guildford Grammar School’s Indigenous Program coordinator Andrew Beck said the inclusion of the boots and entertainment at the match gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy Indigenous culture.
“For the students to have the opportunity to paint these boots, for them to add their designs and their stories to the Western Force players boots is pretty awesome for them,” Beck said.
“Our program is called ‘Boodjar Bidi’ which means country tracks in Noongar language. Our students come from various places around WA, some even from over east. They all have their own stories on why they are here at Guildford and they are adding all those elements into the design of the boots.”
Following the Indigenous Appreciation match, the boots will be donated to the Earbus Foundation for them to auction with the aim to raise much-needed funds and awareness of the charity.
The Earbus Foundation is a WA based children’s charity that works to reduce the incidence of middle ear disease in Aboriginal and at-risk children in our state. Through the Earbus Outreach Programme, a dedicated team visits thousands of children, including over 4,000 Aboriginal children each year.
The students who took part in the boot painting will also be performing as part of the pre-game entertainment at the match on Friday, May 31 at HBF Park.

Team Announcement | Western Force vs Kagifa Samoa
May 30, 2019
Star West Australian winger Brad Lacy will miss Friday night’s clash against powerful pacific side Kagifa Samoa as he nervously awaits results of scans on a knee injury sustained in the opening half of last weekend’s win over Fijian Latui.
Initial indications are the 25-year-old may have damaged his ACL but the full extent of the injury is not yet known. Head Coach Tim Sampson said it is not ideal for Lacey who had been in strong form during the 2019 Global Rapid Rugby Showcase Series.
“It could well be a serious injury for Brad but it is important that we get the results from the specialists first and foremost. It is obviously very disappointing for Brad, but being the tight knit family club that we are, we will rally around him,” Sampson said.
With Lacey out of action, Sampson has looked to another WA youngster, Clay Uyen, to step-up on Friday night.
“Clay has contributed very well this year and has been a handful for the opposition coming off the bench. While we’ll miss Brad, it does provide an opportunity for Clay, and on home turf, I know he will be craving to put in a good performance,” said Sampson.
The front row has seen the addition of two fresh faces with Harrison Lloyd and Tom Sheminant set to play alongside veteran hooker Heath Tessmann, with Sampson expecting a physical encounter up front through the forwards.
“Lloydy is back in after getting over a calf injury and playing some solid minutes in Fiji. Tom Sheminant comes in to start at tighthead prop to allow Kieran Longbottom to come off the bench after playing a lot of minutes during the Asian Showcase Series and in last week’s fixture in Fiji,” Sampson said.
Tevin Ferris will make a return to the starting line-up at number eight with Brynard Stander moving to the bench who has also played a lot of minutes so far this season. Sampson said Ferris has been playing remarkably well and stepping up whenever he is called on.
“Tevin has been outstanding and is that hybrid type backrower, adapting well either playing at six, seven or number eight. Tevin will do a great job,” Sampson said.
After being called up from the Fortescue Premier Grade and making his debut for the Force last week, Rory O’Sullivan has maintained his place in the squad. The UWA Rugby scrumhalf impressed with his composure and adaptability and will have the opportunity to play in front of family and friends at HBF Park.
“Rory came on and did exceptionally well last week, his service from the deck was excellent and show some really good signs in all aspects of his game,” Sampson said.
“He is a very composed and level-headed player and he’s got ability so hopefully he displays much the same on Friday night.”
The team will be running on in the club’s gold and black jersey, which will be worn for the first time in the Global Rapid Rugby competition in recognition of WA Day.
A number of players will also be wearing unique painted boots, created in partnership with students at Guildford Grammar School’s Indigenous Program as part of the club’s Indigenous Appreciation activities taking place on Friday as well as to raise funds and awareness of the Earbus Foundation.

Global Rapid Rugby: Western Force bank on defensive effort to stop Kagifa Samoa

… The Force, unbeaten in their six showcase matches, put in a terrific defensive effort to set the foundation for the 27-15 win over Fijian Latui in their last outing. Coach Tim Sampson knows his side must produce more of the same.
“These guys have a powerful body strength and that’s how they like to play, using their big boppers through the middle of the field,” Sampson said. “They will challenge us up front and they have some very skilful backs. They have that offload mentality.”
… “They love the power game, they thrive off it and will be very hard to contain if we go high. Our decision making at the breakdown, when to contest or when to leave the ball and back our numbers, is crucial. They also rely a lot on their 8,9,10 channels so we have to dominate and take that threat from the set piece.” …
Force starting XV: Harrison Lloyd, Heath Tessmann, Tom Sheminant, Johan Bardoul, Fergus Lee Warner, Henry Stowers, Chris Alcock, Tevin Ferris, Issak Fines, AJ Alatimu, Clay Uyen, Marcel Brache, Masivesi Dakuwaqa, Jack McGregor. Reserves: Feleti Kaitu’u, Markus Vanzati, Kieran Longbottom, Leon Power, Brynard Stander, Andrew Deegan, Rod Davies.
