His development was screwed.
He started off as a number 8 then came to the Brumbies HPU as a prop (loose head from memory). Signed to the Waratahs and moved to hooker where he spent several seasons struggling with his throwing. Crazy stuff particularly when Aus Rugby was crying out for quality props.
The dismantling of the HPU system was another poor ARU decision. When TPN was in the Brumbies HPU with AAC, Sam Norton Knight, Faingaa twins and Daniel Halangahu. All bar Halangahu ended up with test caps, his own prospects ended when he signed with the Tahs as they didn't have a clue in how develop flyhalfs. Norton Knight fell in to the same trap at the Tahs as he was showing promise as a fullback at the Brumbies and he would have learnt far more playing with Larkham.
The Brumbies had a bunch of players who were signed on full contracts straight from club Rugby and they struggled to make the step up. The Academy and HPU had a far better success rate.
