Uni make it five in a row
September 27, 2009
Sydney University withstood a late Randwick fight-back to clinch its fifth consecutive premiership with a 24-19 win in the Shute Shield grand final at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.
Uni, who were minor premiers, scored three tries to two and led for most of the match, apart from a brief period early in the second half.
They dominated the first half, but were forced to defend for long periods of the final term.
The match featured nine Wallabies, six for for the Galloping Greens and three for Uni.
Among the participants were veteran Wallabies flanker Phil Waugh, who turned out for Uni, and the Galloping Greens pair of winger Drew Mitchell and lock Mark Chisholm, both of whom started for Australia in last weekend's Tri-Nations loss to New Zealand in Wellington.
Mitchell scored one of the Galloping Greens' tries, but Uni shaded their opponents at the breakdown and in the scrum.

Students claim another tittle

Sydney University scored three tries to two to add to their impressive trophy cabinet and claim the Tooheys New Shute Shield with a five-point victory over Randwick. In a great day of Rugby at the Sydney Football Stadium, it was the biggest margin of the day as Eastern Suburbs (2nd Grade), Gordon (3rd Grade) and Randwick (4th Grade) all claimed narrow victories.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY V RANDWICK
Sydney University have claimed their fifth straight premiership after defeating Randwick 24-19 in the Tooheys New Shute Shield Grand Final at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Tom Carter was named Mirvac Man of the Match after causing havoc in the midfield in both attack and defence, forming a lethal combination with Perth-bound centre Mitch Inman who scored the decisive try of the match.
Grand Final Week’s worst kept secret was revealed shortly before kick-off with Adam Freier’s inclusion at openside flanker for Randwick, lining up directly against HSBC Waratahs teammate Phil Waugh.
A break by Carter in the fourth minute set up the first scoring chance for Sydney University however Nathan Charles knocked the ball on over the line from the ensuing phase.
The Students didn’t have to wait much longer to bother the scorers, Charles eventually touching down in the eighth minute following a good break by his Australian Under 20s teammate Peter Betham. Halangahu converted from 15m in from the left touchline for a 7-0 lead.
A turning point came in the 25th minute when Freier left the field clutching a hamstring, and Randwick were forced into uncontested scrums when a mouth cut to Atonio Halangahu saw him enter the blood bin.
Marshall Milroy got Randwick on the board via two penalties, before Nick Edwards shot down the left side to take the Uni lead back out to eight.
Randwick finally turned territory into points when Bernie Orbell broke the line before getting a perfect ball between defenders to send Drew Mitchell over in the corner. Milroy missed the conversion leaving Uni with a 14-11 advantage at half-time.
The Galloping Greens hit the lead early into the second half when Francis Fainifo put Milroy over in the right corner, however Uni hit straight back with Mitch Inman scoring a great centres try after ploughing through the defence.
Halangahu’s conversion restored a five-point lead, and he extended that in the 53rd minute with a well-timed drop goal to open up a 24-16 break.
Milroy closed the margin to within a try with his third penalty of the game, but despite repeated opportunities in the University quarter, the Wicks couldn’t break the defending premiers’ line sending the Shute Shield back to campus.
Other injury concerns saw HSBC Waratahs prop Sekope Kepu leave the field during the second half with an ankle injury, while NSW skipper Phil Waugh also came off in the closing stages.
The victory marks Sydney University’s fifth straight premiership, following on from yesterday’s win in the top two grades of Colts. The Students also won the 2009 Gregor George Cup (Club Championship), ES Marks Shield (First Grade Minor Premiers), Sir Roden Cutler Shield (Home Game Champions – 11 defences) and the Eric Spilsted Memorial Shield (Colts Club Championship).Sydney University 24 (Nathan Charles, Nick Edwards, Mitch Inman tries; Daniel Halangahu 2 cons, drop) d Randwick 19 (Drew Mitchell, Marshall Milroy tries; Marshall Milroy 3 pens) at Sydney Football Stadium. Referee: Stuart Dickinson. HT: Sydney University 14-11

Force's new recruit, Mitch Inman, got a good try in response to Randwick's second.
They had an interview with Robbie Deans at half time & he said that the touring squad of ~40 would be named tomorrow and that a number of players who haven't toured this year, and were playing today, would be included in the squad. For mine, I reckon Daniel Halangahu is a shoe in. I've watched him play a few games now and he's been instrumental in every game. If Robbie is taking rookies with not a whole lot of Super 14 experience, I reckon Inman and any of; McCutcheon, Stumbles,Betham or Kepu might get a go too.

Mitch Inman looks promising... a nice signing by the Force... good size and speed nice step...
Squad named tomorrow... geee thats quick... can't wait... Daniel Halangahu has done a great job as fly with Uni again this year... but he'll fight for a spot at the tahs again next year...
I actually think that half a dozen of the boys in this game may get a shot at the spring tour. Kepu, Jerry something (can't spell his name), Mitch Inman, possibly Peter Betham, McCalman and dare I say Seilala Lam (very impressive young flanker)
Jerry Yanuyanutawa. He's been pretty solid each week, I loved when Randwick had the uncontested scrum and the mike picked him up, he was like "yer what?!" Bad move having both hookers on at the same time & then both getting injured within about 2 minutes of each other.
Peter Betham did well today, but like the commentary said he really only got to start because Nathan Trist broke his leg the other week.
I'd love to see DHP get a go in the squad, even though he has not had that much Super 14 experience. Even so Inman has had even less experience but he could still get a go and even if DHP doesn't get played he's had a fantastic season in shute shield and would soak everything up.
I think taking a few boys along just for the experience of going on tour with the Wallabies and training with them full time would be a tremendous learning curve for them. The younger boys could play some mid-week scratch matches while the more senior, experienced players play against the international teams. It would be great for their development and good preparation for 2011.
Pete Betham... I'm not sure if he is currently signed with a S14 team. I have a feeling the Brumbies let him go as he isn't on 2010 team list... Furthermore Julian Huxley is on the 2010, i don' if that means he is coming back or the Brumbies are obligated to list him as he is still on contract? I really don't know...
In regards to Pete Betham initially in his first year of the two year contract he had a long term injury which may have been reoccurring and this year played mostly AUS 7s squad... he could be a good signing for a western team...... or the Brumbies have him as a tier 2 player who'll spend 2010 in AUS 7s ranks developing...
Nice work Uni
I would suggest that the Squad was already selected pending injury report from the Final.

Betham playing 2nd's isn't so much the measure of his ability but a measure of Uni's depth. He has been rather impressive on the 7's circuit.
It'd be great if Hux did come back. I imagine they probably keep him listed pending approval from the docs although not playing any club rugby this year isn't so good a sign.
As for players touring... Eddie took a handful of uncapped (in Super rugby) players on the 2005 UK tour. I think they only played one game but I think it was Digby Ioane, Leroy Houston and a couple of others. You can only imagine him taking players for a couple of spots. Hard to imagine him taking any tight-five forwards (except maybe a hooker now that Freier is injured) or 7s with George Smith, David Pocock and Phil Waugh all available up until 2011. He might take one or two 6/8s. We could use more depth at 9 so there could be someone there. Don't reckon any 10s, 12s or 13s will come either. You could count on a winger and a fullback though.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
James, I was suprised to see Huxley on the 2010 player list... he worked as a specialist kicking coach last season for with the boys... i would have thought if he was making a come back it would be in the media... i guess we'll see come February 2010
He might take one or two 6/8s.
Developing a new position in the backline James?
I'm going with you meaning the backrow combo![]()

I suppose it would be a bit uncouth to take them down.
