I have the Powershot SX100IS (8MP, not 10 otherwise same) and a Canon EOS 300D DSLR. Whilst the 100IS has a longer optical zoom and MP rating than the 300D, I wonder if it actually takes a better (or perhaps bigger) pic.
It depends on your needs and what you can afford. If you go with a DSLR, make SURE you get quality lenses because you can always replace the body relatively cheaply.
I notice in the most recent JB Hifi catalogue (picked up today), there is a Canon 1000D DSLR twin lens kit for $996.

Other thing about the Canon EOS digitals is that they can take lenses from EOS film cameras
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
You don't have it in your wish list but if you want an outstanding compact camera take a very close look at the Canon G10... a high-quality first rate unit... A SLR in a compact body...

tdevil's advice is spot on - you need to pick the thing up and see how it feels. I like Nikons but they're too heavy for me and the grips are too big. Canons are lighter, and have smaller grips (we have a Canon EOS 300D, and it's doing just fine ... we also have my trusty Sony Powershot compact, for which we also have a housing to make it a dive camera for both still snapshots and video).

Yes I know,,, but it has all the
SLR controls in a small fixed lens camera...SLR is the best, just get a good lens... but if you really need a compact get the Canon G10 is the way forward... many of the photo journos use them as back ups here in Sydney...
The canon 5D SLR is good, but the Nikons have greatly improved but are more expensive... However this is about compacts and the G10 is king... If you know how to really use a SLR correctly…
The 5D also has good video... G10 is OK at half the price if you buy wisely...

Just as I decide I want the Panasonic FZ28 I read a press release on Panasonic's web site that they have released a upgrade on the FZ28 called a FZ35
It will be released in September so I think I am going to wait

patience IS a virtue
But there is always something new being released or just about to be released. If you wait for the next thing, you'll wait forever! (Although, September's not that far off).
