RugbyWA CEO Greg Harris has today announced his resignation.
Harris read from a prepared statement in making the announcement at the RugbyWA offices at Perry Lakes this morning.
“It is with more than a tinge of regret that I inform you of my decision to resign as the Chief Executive Officer of RugbyWA and the Emirates Western Force,” said Harris.
“My decision has been based on personal reasons and I am disappointed that I will not be able to enjoy the future successes of rugby in Western Australia.”
“In the 12 months which I have been in the position there have indeed been many challenges and I would like to think many achievements.”
“I would like to acknowledge the support which I have experienced from the Chairman and the Board of RugbyWA, my work colleagues, the players and the supporters during my time here in Perth.”
“I look forward to returning in a couple of year’s time to support the Emirates Western Force in a new redeveloped Members Equity Stadium,” he said.
RugbyWA Chairman Geoff Stooke responded via a prepared statement.
“RugbyWA and the Emirates Western Force is very disappointed that Greg is to move back to Sydney but we fully understand,” said Stooke.
“Changes in Greg’s personal circumstances have made it a very difficult time for him here in the West. Despite this he has approached his role with energy and enthusiasm and has made a significant contribution.”
“He has successfully addressed a number of major issues and has introduced a series of changes and innovations, all of which will greatly assist our organisation as we move forward,” he said.
“Greg will depart with our thanks, our appreciation and our best wishes.”
Stooke announced that a successor for the CEO position had been appointed.
“The need to quickly identify a successor to Greg and have a seamless transition is paramount. To this end Greg has given us three months notice but has also offered to assist the organisation in key areas beyond this time if necessary. Greg has also assisted RugbyWA in identifying his replacement,” he said.
“It is with pleasure that I can announce today that Mr Vern Reid is to succeed Greg as the CEO of RugbyWA and the Emirates Western Force. He will take up the appointment in late May.”
“Vern is a Western Australian and is currently the CEO of the Princess Margaret Foundation. Prior to this he had a long history of management in elite sport. He is a former CEO of the Perth Wildcats and held senior management positions with the America’s Cup Defence and with the Fremantle Dockers.”
“Vern has had a ‘lifetime’ involvement in the sport of rugby and he will be the first to admit that rugby is one of his great passions.”
“We congratulate Vern and welcome him to what will be a challenging but rewarding role and look forward to him building on the great work done by Greg and the inaugural CEO, Peter O’Meara.”
Mr Harris congratulated Mr Reid on his appointment to the role of CEO.
“I would like to congratulate my successor, Mr Vern Reid, on his appointment,” said Harris.
“Vern brings to the position some unique qualities and extensive experience in professional sport in Western Australia.”
“This will be a very seamless transition for the RugbyWA family due to Vern’s ability and the respect which we hold for each other.”

Well that’s got to be the best kept secret in Perth for a while... Well he got Members Equity Stadium for 2010... And had managed over a difficult time with Coach Mitchell and the team... the creation of the match committee and their success in winning the Australian Slam this year... Furthermore landed some new sponsors… He looked to be doing a good job... I wish him all the best...
The statement didn't say if his departure was imminent or he will see out the season and the player contracts still outstanding...
We have lots of secrets ... he's given 3 months notice
