Lions assistant coach Leon Boshoff has quit despite being cleared of making racist remarks after a Super 14 drubbing from fellow South African side the Stormers.

The coach in charge of the forwards at the Johannesburg-based franchise was found guilty of abusive language during a post-match video session last week and given a written warning.

A Lions statement said Boshoff would be relieved of his contractual obligations with immediate effect after an incident that made front-page headlines in South Africa.

Boshoff reportedly criticised two black Lions, utility back Earl Rose and Springboks prop Lawrence Sephaka, during a review of the 56-18 defeat in Cape Town.

The Lions bounced back last week with an unexpected 25-17 victory over Australian visitors the Brumbies, but remain second last on the Super 14 table after six rounds.

With pressure mounting on Lions coach Eugene Eloff, media speculation has linked South African Jake White and Australian Eddie Jones – the pair who guided South Africa to the 2007 Rugby World Cup title – with the post.
