PERTH Airport was on high alert this morning when an Emirates plane made an emergency landing with reports of smoke or a burning smell in the cabin.
The flight, EK425, left Perth International Airport bound for Dubai at 6.01am but turned back after 90 minutes with the pilot apparently reporting smoke in the plane.
The pilot told air traffic control at 7.50am that there was a technical issue with the Airbus A340.
The plane was met by emergency personnel after it made a textbook emergency landing about 8.45am. It was parked away from the terminal, which is standard procedure.
All 121 on board were disembarked.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman David Hope confirmed the authority had been notified of the incident.
``We have been informed that there were 121 people on board and they experienced smoke in the cockpit about 200 nautical miles from Perth,'' he said.
``The crew carried out an appropriate checklist and the flight returned to Perth.''
However Emirates said this morning there was no smoke in the cabin or cockpit of the plane.
A spokesperson said the plane had returned after a burning smell was detected.
Engineers were investigating the cause of the smell.
Passengers would be carried on another Emirates flight today.
The spokesperson said the decision to return was a precautionary measure.
Passengers and crew were held in the international terminal lounge area this morning before being processed by Customs, Immigration or Quarantine officers.
A passenger told ABC radio this morning that she did not notice smoke in the cabin.
Airport corporate affairs manager Malcolm Bradshaw said it was not unusual for planes to return to Perth in such circumstances.

What? I think i'd rather a safe emergency landing over dropping out of the sky and getting my head smashed into the roof.
Apparently the beer fridge was on th eblink.
thats actually an interesting point. All passengers are advised that despite the seatbelt sign being off that passengers should keep their seatbelts fastened at all times.
I wonder how many people abora that Qantas flight would have been injured if all the passangers had their seatbelts done up?
True, im not advocating that Qantas not pay compensation to those who deserve it. Merely wondering from an aviation students viewpoint, I have often wondered that if they advise seatbelts remain fastened why people take them off anyway apart from stretching and going to the the toilet
It is interesting to point out that the same situation occured on a Qantas flight that was returned to Perth under the same circumstances, a burning smell was detected 30 mins into a flight to Brisbane, and without any alarms going off the Pilot declared an emergency the flight and was directed to return to Perth, yet no fault was found, I believe it was something being left in the the oven/microwave.
Qantas have the best Pilots and still have one of the best safety records in the world.
so you hit the ground last shasta?
I reckon it's as close to rebellion that the general populace can ever get and they jsut relish the opportunity- it's like how when you land the second you finish hard breaking all the 'rebels' take off their seatbelt, and insist on getting out of the seat and start fishing around the overhead bins before the fasten seat-belt sign comes off.
Sure it's nice to get up and stretch the legs, but seriously, whats another 30 seconds to wait until the captain is happy to have you romaing about???
They don't beat the folk on Air China though- those dudes were up and running while the plane was still on the runwayEvidently the on-board calisthenics wasn't enough activity for them.

Ever heard of a plane reversing into a mountain, jono?
We usually stay sittinng & let them all get off. Unless you're busting for a disgusting ciggy or sumfink you still usually need to wait for your baggage, anyway.whats another 30 seconds to wait until the captain is happy to have you romaing about???
