ok didn't know that Netcom's were so dodgynot enough of a geek for that - have a Billion Voip thing (love my $10 phone bill - down from $120) - but I don't use Aussie Torrents
Ecky will probably get shot down for this as well - this is where we buy our computer bits and pieces - :: PLE Computers :: they seem competitive to us - but if you find better would appreciate the heads up.
Larry - getting a helpdesk to help you in Oz is about as likely as someone posting on GTT. Getting a helpdesk to come to your house - well.... about as likely as the Tahs winning the S14 - but as we have seen what do I know![]()

Aww... don't bag out GTT in this thread - Moses has offered up some great information/assistance! Bagging the 'tahs is always OK though![]()
Ple's website looks too organised and neat to be cheap.
If you want cheap parts, you can't beat MSY Technology Pty
If you want a website that makes sense, customer service, and handholding go to Harris Technology, Harvey Norman or PLE who'll be happy to charge a premium for the service.

Helpdesk support in Aus can be excellent. I worked for OzEmail for 2.5 years in the late 90's and reckon we did a pretty good job overall. Considering you're expected to take 40 calls in a shift it can be bloody hard work.
There's a support scope that has to be stuck to - just cause you 'know computers' doens't mean you have the time to fix their printer or setup MS Office. If staff are helping with unsupported software/hardware then they're not helping the customers in the queue, which will then blow out and everyone has to wait longer.
The fact that you have to wait on hold for 40 minutes doesn't sit well with many people, but if you want instant service then call a technician out to your house and he'll hapilly look at everything, for $150 per hour. Or get a yr 10 student out to break things.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

You pay them for a service, it doesn't do what it's supposed to and they won't come to your house and fix it.Now I understand why you all drink so much!

Call Beaver and give him $20 to come over and fix it for you.

In most cases you pay them for an Internet connection. Due to your hardware, software or lack of knowledge it doesn't work correctly.
Would you blame the roads department cause your car doesn't start or you can't drive?
It will be interesting to hear where Ecky got this modem from
Mosses I do appreciate your input - just wish you expressed it differently sometimes - wasn't saying that Help Desks are never helpful - just as you pointed out there are bounds on what they can help with - and occasionally something like a basic checklist of things that non-geeky peps like this grumpy old woman can do would save a lot of frustration for both the Help Desk Peps and Customers alike.
Geek speak is a whole different language to normal people. Like that helpdesk on the IT guy - have you checked that the plug is plugged in - are you sure.....

On some of the roads in our fair country - yes...
If none of the above works - get them to test the lines - it could be the 'roads' causing the problem.
In my help desk days, I came across this more than once where after much to-ing and fro-ing the plug was indeed not plugged in...Originally Posted by TQ1
Helpdesk 'Praise' for ya there Coach.. anyone who went through that hell deserves it!
Could have picked it up many places. Netcomm are usually a pretty decent brand and had a solid reputation in dialup days. In fact the Netcomm Roadster was one of the top modems around.Originally Posted by queer one
This particular model however has issues when BitTorrent is running, apparently the large number of connections required for P2P can overload the NAT table causing the dropouts. That said, a hard reset can fix it for a few days..
