    Wallabies appeal Elsom suspension

    Wallabies appeal Elsom suspension

August 27, 2008 STUNNED Australia officials will appeal the severity of Rocky Elsom's punishment for pulling down South Africa skipper Victor Matfield in a lineout.
Elsom was suspended for a week after a delayed decision by SANZAR disciplinary officer, New Zealander Nick Davidson QC, for the incident which drew only a penalty from referee Lyndon Bray early in the second half of Australia's 27-15 breakthrough win in Durban.

Team officials confirmed Wednesday they would appeal against the severity of Elsom's ban, although the chances of success are historically low.

The appeal will be heard on Thursday at 12pm (8pm EST) by three SANZAR officials in a telephone hook-up.

Coach Robbie Deans will delay the announcement of his team for Saturday's Tri-Nations Test in Johannesburg until late Thursday.

If Elsom is rubbed out, one of the contenders to replace him in the No.6 jersey, Hugh McMeniman, said the Australian players had been surprised at the punishment.

“I think it's a bit shocking for all of us because with that ruling it sets a precedent now,” McMeniman told reporters.

“I guess there'll be nothing of the sort, bringing down lineouts like that. Even though it wasn't a real bad one it sets a precedent now.”

Davidson said in his ruling that “any interference of this kind carries real danger and a sanction is required”, although Matfield's evidence included the fact he had not suffered any serious injury.

It could now be up to the Wallabies' last men standing to overcome a massive historical hurdle when they take on the Springboks at Ellis Park.

Elsom's suspension would come on top of shoulder injuries to Dan Vickerman and Berrick Barnes, a nasty illness that has shed two kilograms from McMeniman's playing weight and reinforcement Nathan Sharpe's battle against jetlag after his late arrival.

Deans will name a team that he hopes will be able to put those setbacks behind it and conjure up Australia's first win at the 1,700m altitude of Jo'burg in 45 years.

And he'll probably need the luckless McMeniman, who missed last Saturday's match with an illness that ended up lasting three days.

“I've lost a couple of kilos so I've just got to get that back on before the weekend,” he said.

“It's like one of the things that could only happen to me.”

The big Queenslander said team medical staff had been baffled by the bout of vomiting which began on Friday night.

“It could have been picked up from my hands, something I picked up, food, anything so all we know is it was a pretty bad case to keep me out for that game which was real disappointing,” he said.

“I've had something to eat this morning which was pretty much the first thing in three days which I kept down.”

Two of McMeniman, Sharpe and Dean Mumm would fill Elsom's blindside flanker position and Vickerman's place at lock, with the other likely to sit on the bench.

The only other backrow cover Deans has in his squad is uncapped Western Force loose forward Richard Brown.

In the backs, five-eighth Matt Giteau is disappointed his burgeoning combination with the playmaking Barnes won't continue, but is confident league convert Timana Tahu or skipper Stirling Mortlock can play a similar role.

“I think whether they bring Stirling into inside centre or Timana, they've both got the ability to ball-play,” Giteau said.

“It's more just getting your head around it, that you've got to ball-play more instead of being those runners.

“You don't want to take things away from players that they're good at. Timana's obviously a great runner, so is Stirling, but they can also pass the ball and use the ball well.”

Part of me wants the appeal to work cos it means Rocky can play and boost a squad that already has a good list of injuries. But yet another part of me hopes it doesnt work, so Brownie might possibly get a go. I think brown is more than capable of replacing him at 6.

Why not put Crossy in the mix instead of Tahu. I know its kind of already been decided that Tahu will get his run on debut, but Crossy and Gits are a proven success together. If it comes down to 'experimenting with combinations' then fair enough but that means Brownie should be given the same chance and put in the run on side, or the bench at the least.

SPRINGBOKS CONSIDER VAN DER LINDE APPEAL

South Africa will consider appealing against the four-week suspension handed out to prop CJ van der Linde on Wednesday.

National teams’ manager Andy Marinos said the decision would be made once they had received the full report of the
SANZAR Judicial Officer, Nick Davidson QC of New Zealand.

Van der Linde was cleared of a charge of striking Australian scrumhalf Sam Cordingley with his head. He was suspended until 22 September after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of dangerously entering a ruck.

“We’ll consider an appeal once we have seen the full verdict,” said Marinos. “We should receive it in the morning [Wednesday], after which we have 48 hours to appeal if we so wish.”

I find both Elsom's and Van Der Halfwit's behaviour distinctly unappealing and believe they both got exactly what they deserved.

While Elsom's behaviour was at the lower end, let's not forget he is a serial offender.

Van Der Whatever went into the ruck either recklessly or with intent to cause serious harm, and it was a miracle no one was hurt. Four weeks is about right.

Get over the parochial nonsense, the Tribunal did a fair and reasonable job.

If van der Linde appeals his suspension based on a guilty plea to a lesser charge, does that mean he wants the case reconsidered on the original charge? If so, he'll get something more like 8 weeks for a headbutt.

Even though Mortlock has played 12 before, he's not a starting 12 material. He's a bit of a waste at 12, with his hard running and tackling needed more at 13.

I think Tahu shld be fine to play at 12. He did have moments of brilliances last week.

I think Rocky's ban is way over the top. It deserved a penalty - no more. Bloody Kiwis hate to see Aust win anything.

what is it with the brown bandwagon over here, even without rocky we have two or three people ahead of brown for a back rower role!

i know he is your boy but if you try to be objective about it he isnt currently in the mix!

Bit of black potting there wj.

Is there actually a precedent in Test Rugby for being rubbed out for a week for pulling down in the lineout? I can't think of any in recent times but happy to stand corrected.
I haven't seen it so I can't know how serious it looked, but it seems Lyndon Bray didn't think anything special of it.
