    Twist in Giteau wrangle

    Twist in Giteau wrangle
    9th December 2008, 9:30 WST

The management company threatening to terminate Matt Giteau’s Western Force contract a year early is also responsible for enforcing the Australian Rugby Union’s commercial contracts.

Sports and Entertainment Limited, whose chief executive James Erskine indicated last month he would seek legal advice over Giteau’s employment arrangements with the Force and the ARU, states on its website its responsibilities to the national body include “contract compliance”.

So close is the link between the ARU and SEL that the company has an office in rugby headquarters in Sydney to administer the ARU’s lucrative licensing and merchandising business.

Which is all fairly meaningless - not much different from, say, "His agent is negotiating a sponsorship with Ford Australia, and owns shares in Ford, and DRIVES a Ford!"

    its not really meaningless,
the company that is selling giteau is also the company responsable for inforcing contracts,

i.e, if there is a way out then they would know it!

Classic piece of misleading journalism - they are not responsible for enforcing player contracts, they are responsible for licensing, marketing and subsequent enforcing of those contracts, royalties etc. Totally separate parts of the Rugby business...

so they are responsable for part of the contract but not all of it?

No, as a company they do sports management (Giteau, Capt Mark Phillips etc) and they are also responsible for ARU marketing - from their website, "all areas of retail distribution including chain and independent sports stores, department and discount department stores, gift, souvenir and online as well as the ARU’s own concept store."

Different thing, and poor journalism to allow the two to be confused. The most that could be said is that the company as a whole could perhaps be conflicted if the negotiations between Giteau and the ARU got really nasty and the ARU threatened to sever all links with SEL. Ultimately Giteau's problem, and presumably something he considered when he signed with them. Not really any different than SEL representing both Warne and the ICC though. They also do museums and the Sydney Opera house apparently, so the article should maybe suggest Gits steer clear of sopranos and karaoke (good advice for everyone IMHO).

SEL offers broader business services than just your average sports agent.

SEL...is also a event management and production company, it also offers a sports management service to individuals, venues and brands. They are the goods...

    http://www.sel.com.au/

    SEL: ARU Licensing Program

SEL manages all aspects of the ARU’s Licensing Program, from the generation of new business and associated execution of licensing agreements, through to contract compliance, royalty management, product development and approval, and marketing concepts to drive acceptance and retail sales of the Licensed Products.

The provision of these services has enabled SEL to successfully oversee the strategic expansion of the ARU’s Licensing Program to a point where it now
encompasses all areas of retail distribution including chain and independent sports stores, department and discount department stores, gift, souvenir and online as well as the ARU’s own
    concept store.

As with all licensing programs, it has been critical that the ARU Licensing Program be accepted across all stakeholders involved with the ARU. SEL has successfully done this by integrating the program with broadcasters, travel and tour operators, sponsors, suppliers, governments, venues, members and other key stakeholders.

The ARU Licensing programs are one of the leading Australian Sports Licensing programs.

True. But more often a deliberate muck raking tactic than the slip-up of a lazy, incompetent hack.

I am joining the annoyed and pissed off about this never-ending-Giteau-saga.

Seriously, I don't think anyone CARES about the finer details now. We just want to know if our boy is going, and if so why. That's all I want. Really. However, SOON please... before next Christmas would be preferable!

I think if you were to take a step back you would realise that this saga is actually perpetuated far far more on this forum than anywhere else. Or to express it a little differently, if everyone on TWF was to STFU about the issue you wouldn't be winding each other into a state.

You may pretend that you're only responding to something printed elsewhere, but the reality is different.

    Yours
