    Reward Our Referees

The standard of refereeing in WA club rugby this year has been such that there should be a push to reward their efforts.

I propose that come the finals the top 20 referees from WA should be given a fully funded, all expenses paid trip to South Australia for a month so that they can officiate over the South Australian finals.

In return, RugbyWA should pay for the 20 best SA referees to come to WA to officiate over our finals series.

Our referees will have the oportunity to enjoy themselves in a relaxed atmosphere officiating over games which will not raise their stress levels or tax their skills, and we will have the benefit of a group of referees who will be trying hard to do the best they can.

Seems like a win win. Each competition gets officials that are out to impress and eager to do the right thing. They will not be swayed or biased by happenings that may have gone on during the regular season.

But could also cause problems if the two competitions have evolved to reward and punish certain actions slightly differently, or certain actions are interpreted in a different way.

I know there is a common 'set of laws' or 'rulebook' (please correct me Ecky) but from personal experience different competitions do in fact, not necessarily on purpose, evolve to view the same laws/rules slightly differently.

It would be tough for a team to be penalised and get knocked out in the first rounds of the finals as a result of something that would not have been judged the same way during the regular season.

Ask Rugby WA how many refs passed the fitness test. My source tells me that the anointed top referee and most of the refs doing Premiers were 'unavailable' for fitness testing on a recent bye weekend. One has even been dropped to thirds for failing.

So what you're saying Father is the ref's would all be quite enthusiastic about a weekend away on the sauce together?
With a couple hours of whistle blowing in the middle...

But RugbyWA might not be so inclined...

At 2AM my night shift addled brain actually took this as a genuine post... I should have seen right through it, Fulvio being complimentary, people being nice to Ref's, wanting to expose the WA competition to South Australian referee's... all too good to be true or just plain ridiculous...

I better be off to bed now...

Fulvio - needs to get his referee ticket, do a few Premier Grade games and then re-write his opening thread.

Or even better, you join Fulvio and ref some games Hansie.

You both might learn something about the game and gain some genuine humility in the process.

I'd pay money to watch a game where you were refereeing and Fulvio and Ecky were your touch judges. Would make the UFC look like a picnic in a park.

    Gee, guys, I'm hurt.

I try and be nice and this is what I get.

I can't referee as I'm mildly dyslexic, and there is a delay between my brain being able to process visual data and converting it to a verbal or physical response. Only a half second or so, but sufficient to disrupt the instant flow of decision making.

    What's everyone else's excuse?

I wouldn't be surprised to find that South Australian referees have a sharper eye than our locals given what little else there is to distract them in their fair state ...

    Fulvios a great referee

I have had the opportunity to play in a game that the great FS controlled as a ref.
It was one of the easiest that I have ever played because of FS's fitness level the furtherest you had to run was about 10 meters. There were lots of scrums which were all uncontested because FS wasn't clear about the rules.
