Julian Huxley was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2008, bringing his career to a halt.
Former Brumbies and Wallabies outside back Julian Huxley is bidding for a remarkable comeback to rugby union, two years after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Huxley has received a clearance from the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) but several details are yet to be finalised including a medical clearance.
If the paper work can be finalised within the next 48 hours, Huxley could play for the Brumby Runners against the Barbarians on Friday in the curtain raiser to the Brumbies/Lions game at Canberra Stadium.
Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan says there are still issues to be resolved.
"There's a lot to work through, the desire is still very strong and burning from his side," he said.
"But we are still yet to provide medical clearance - look that may not happen in time for Friday night.
"This has been going on for some time, but the desire is still there."
Fagan admits the situation thrusts the club into "uncharted territory".
"Julian has received clearance from some neurosurgeons who have supported his return to rugby," he said.
"We've got to continue to tick the boxes. The question is how many there are to tick. Each team we tick one, there appear to be other issues we need to address."
Fagan hopes the lengthy process of negotiating Huxley's return is drawing towards a conclusion.
"We're getting closer, and I'd like to think all things working out well that we may be in a position to provide that clearance and allow Julian to play in the near future," he said.
