Crusaders captain Kieran Read will miss Sunday's Super Rugby match against Queensland as he battles to make a full recovery from concussion suffered last month.
No.8 Read, named the best player in the world last year, suffered his second concussion of the season against the Chiefs on April 19 and has not played since.
The 28-year-old All Black will not feature for the Crusaders in Brisbane after coach Todd Blackadder made an early call to rule him out of the match.
"We always knew that Kieran was a 50-50 call for this week and although he's making good progress, we would rather not leave it to later in the week to make a decision," Blackadder said.
He said Read, who was also concussed against the Hurricanes in March forcing him to miss a match, was recovering well, but his symptoms have not completely cleared.
"He has received two knocks in the past month and we are taking no risks," Blackadder said.
The Crusaders side to face the Reds will be named on Thursday.

Although Read is quality he will not be missed against the Reds. If both teams play to their form the Reds will be smashed.
Seriously people? That'll do me!
There are 3 kiwi teams within a point or two of us. The reds are an Australian team with little chance of overhauling us but they still have games against 2 of them. I hope they can find some form and bowl both over and beat the Tahs too.

I think the incompetent coach thing is enough to tip me over the edge. The New Zealand conference isnt the unassailable fortress it has been, but the Reds have a magical knack of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory at the moment. I struggle to believe them capable of beating any of the NZ teams at the moment, unless it is as the result of overconfidence mixing with an uncharateristically stellar performance by the Reds.
The only likely one is the Tahs, who have usually imploded by this point in the season, by the time the Reds get a crack at them it might well be a case of who loses the game least.
Anyway, it'd be good for the Reds to pick up some victories along the way, which will make our run to the finals that much easier, but they're a bit of a shambles at the moment and Dicky is shuffling his backline in a vain attempt to fix what is essentially a problem with the forwards not tackling or getting over the ad line.
