New Perth-Bayswater first grade coach Dean Carlisle is ensuring his senior players get a head start for the 2012 season with a summer Strength and Conditioning program.
Dean came into the role armed with stats on player injuries and key areas where players could benefit from pre-season conditioning. He was well aware that while the technical skills of playing senior rugby in Western Australia were important, players needed better physical preparation to perform at peak levels through a demanding season.
Dean has called in personal trainer and mixed martial arts instructor Nicola Wright to design and run a specialised Strength and Conditioning program for the senior player group — prospective first and second grade players, and selected under 20s and women players.
Nicola has formerly worked with the North Harbour provincial rugby team in New Zealand and has brought some of that program to Perth-Bayswater, combined with intensive research as a strength and conditioning specialist.
No muscle gets neglected in these workouts
Nicola aims to combat high injury rates by identifying player weaknesses and turn them into strengths, working on core body strength in the purpose-designed program. The program avoids boring routines and repetitive endurance training by using varied and challenging group exercises, combined with modified ball games and supported by individually tailored gym programs where needed.
The initial program will run throughout November, leaving the senior playing group with a summer conditioning program to prepare for the 2012 season.
Nicola says she has been very encouraged by the good turnout by players and the positive feedback she has received. She feels the players are starting to see the areas they need to work on and are enjoying the program. Nicola plans to stay involved with the club in the 2012 season, coming to games to target further strength and conditioning activities and helping the players with advice and services such as individual programs and massage therapy.
Dean is confident that Perth-Bayswater will have a senior playing group reaching higher levels of preparation at the start of the season than the club has known at any time in the past.
