    Scottish injury woes

Jacobsen out of world cup with calf injury
(Rugby News Service) Monday 10 September 2007
    By Julie Clothier
L'ETRAT, 10 September - The Scotland prop Allan Jacobsen has been ruled out of the rest of the IRB Rugby World Cup with an injury to his left calf muscle.

He was injured during the first half of Scotland's 56-10 victory against Portugal on Sunday.

Team doctor James Robson said the injury, which will keep Jacobsen sidelined for six to eight weeks, was "just one of these freak accidents".

"Unfortunately Allan Jacobsen is out of the tournament because of damage to his calf muscle. It is quite a nasty tear. There's a hole in his calf muscle that wasn't there before, which is about 2cm by 2.5cm," Robson said.

"The ultrasound shows the hole but it's actually quite easy to find. That's a graphic illustration of how the boys put their bodies on the line."

Robson added that Jacobsen, who was called up to Scotland's world cup squad in Australia in 2003 as a replacement for the injured Gavin Kerr, was in fantastic shape ahead of the tournament in France.

Uncapped prop Alasdair Dickinson, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Tuesday, has been called into the squad.

Dickinson was part of Scotland's world cup preparation squad and assistant coach George Graham said he was a "ready-made replacement".

Flanker Allister Hogg said Jacobsen's departure was a huge loss. "I am really disappointed for Chunk (the nickname by which Jacobsen is known). He's the heart and soul of the squad. He's an upbeat guy and everyone gets along with him."

A number of other Scotland players will also miss training for part of this week due to injuries sustained during Sunday's game.

Lock Nathan Hines (ankle and knee bruising), wing Sean Lamont (ankle), flanker Allister Hogg (dead leg) and full-back Rory Lamont (shoulder bruising) will all receive treatment from the Scotland medical team.

"It's always a concern but we will do our utmost to ensure everyone is turned around as quickly as possible," Robson said.

Centre Andrew Henderson, meanwhile, continues to make "slow progress" following the dead leg he suffered in last month's match against South Africa.

Scotland's next match is Tuesday week against Romania in Edinburgh.
