The Navy Canberra Vikings have added a 29th member to their Mazda Australian Rugby Championship (ARC) squad with team mascot, Odin, joining the side today.

The new addition, proudly brought to the rugby public by the Royal Australian Navy, is an energetic, six-foot, football-loving Viking who will rally support for the team at all Navy Canberra Vikings home matches.

Odin was given his name following a vote by the Canberra public on Scotty and Nige for Breakfast on Canberra radio station, FM104.7.

In Norse mythology, Odin was bringer of victory and king of the gods, and held court in Valhalla, the afterlife for brave warriors.

Brumbies Rugby CEO Andrew Fagan says he’s delighted to welcome Odin to the Navy Canberra Vikings’ family.

“Odin’s a strapping mascot who I’m sure will quickly become a favourite with Navy Canberra Vikings supporters and the Canberra community,” he said. “This competition’s the beginning of an exciting new era for ACT and Australian rugby, and we thought it appropriate to introduce an exciting new mascot to reflect this revolutionary period.

“Our CA Brumbies mascot, Brumby Jack, has been extremely popular and a great representative for the Brumbies organisation at Canberra Stadium and around town. We’re looking forward to Odin joining ‘BJ’ in the Brumbies Rugby mascots’ stable and similarly endearing himself to the Canberra public.”

Odin was present at the Navy Canberra Vikings’ Mazda ARC season opener on Saturday at Manuka Oval against the Melbourne Rebels. The Navy Canberra Vikings will host four home matches, three at Manuka Oval and one at Canberra Stadium.

The Navy Canberra Vikings' next home match is against the Ballymore Tornadoes at Manuka Oval on Sunday 26 August.

General Admission tickets for Mazda ARC matches are currently on sale from Canberra Ticketek and all Ticketek agencies. Adults $20, Concessions $10 and children 15 and under are free
