MATT Giteau suffered a "momentary blackout" at a Sydney nightclub on Sunday, while celebrating Australia's Tri-Nations win over New Zealand in Melbourne the night before.

A team spokesman said today that Giteau had not broken team protocol, nor had he been drinking excessively.

The incident occurred as teammate Lote Tuqiri was out partying before failing to front for a Wallabies recovery session on Monday.

Tuqiri was subsequently fined $20,000 and banned for Australia's final two Tests of the Tri-Nations series after blowing over the team's limit at an alcohol testing.

The Wallabies spokesman said that Giteau had provided a urine sample in which no traces of illegal substances had been found.

The spokesman also said there was no evidence that any drink spiking had taken place.

Giteau will take his place in the Wallabies line-up against South Africa at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.

Alledgely he was carried out of the nightclub - not because of alchol or drugs - but was fit enough to attend the captains run this morning - so he'ill be playing saturday - got to wonder though

Australian Rugby Union high performance manager Pat Wilson said the organisation did not release information about Giteau earlier in the week because it wanted to run tests to determine whether the star may be afflicted with a condition such as diabetes or epilepsy.

While some of his teammates have attracted attention for off-field incidents, Giteau has been regarded as a cleanskin and was among a group of Wallabies sent over to South Africa early to prepare for Australia's Test in Cape Town last month.

Giteau will take his place in the Wallabies line-up against South Africa at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.
