    Jones quits Reds

    Jones quits Reds

    Phil Lutton
    Monday, May 21, 2007

Queensland Reds coach Eddie Jones has resigned.

Jones offered his resignation today to Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) chairman Peter Lewis after a season where the Reds took the Super 14 wooden spoon.

In a joint statement, both parties said the decision had been made in the best interests of the Reds, to allow Queensland Rugby to make long term decisions on the coaching structure.

Jones will continue in the role for the time being to assist with the post-season review and the orderly transition to a new coach.

"This is a regrettable but amicable parting of the ways," Lewis said.

"Eddie's family is relocating to the UK and, while he had initially announced his intention to coach the Reds in 2008, he decided that it was in Queensland Rugby's best interests to recruit a successor now rather than endure 12 months of instability and speculation.

"While we would have loved to have Eddie see out his full three year term, we respect his decision and welcome his willingness to assist with an orderly transition.

"Queensland Rugby owes Eddie Jones a debt of gratitude for the contribution he has made and will continue to make over the next couple of months. Few people realise just how hard he worked for the Reds and how disappointed he is that it hasn't worked out how we all wished.

"His legacy is a more professional attitude and structure; enhanced facilities and programs, and the development of young players to step into the gaps left by the rotten bad luck he's had with injuries this season.

"I've always found Eddie to be honest and hard working, and he's been especially helpful in his work with sponsors and the 48-10 club, for which I thank him."

Jones said he was sorry to be leaving the Reds but would help wherever required to make the transition as smooth and professional as possible.

"Given all the recent speculation in the media and in general, Peter and I thought it was in the best interests of Queensland Rugby that I move on.

"'I look forward to overseeing the transition to the new coach and ensuring the transition is as smooth as possible," he said.

Queensland Rugby CEO Ken Freer said the Board will assemble later this week to settle on a process for recruiting a successor and that he would welcome Eddie Jones' involvement in that process.

"It's vital that we get this settled quickly and we will be keen to do that," Freer said.

Jones and Lewis will be holding a press conference this afternoon at Ballymore.

Wallabies assistant coach Michael Foley, Auckland Blues coach David Nucifora and former Wallaby Pat Howard are among the leading contenders for the job.

    It had to happen,
there was far too much 'denial' by both Eddie and the Reds management.

Still have no idea why they took him on in the first place.

Like many "rebound relationships' it was doomed to fail.

Hope the Reds find true love in there next relationship.

I honestly don't think any Coach could have done better than Jones did this year considering the injury toll and the terrible platform he inherited.
However, he was just such an arse about how he went about things that he lost all credability with supporters and detractors alike.
I believe he is a bad loss to the Australian system but obviously the current format was unsustainable and he had very little room to move.
Perhaps after a few years cooling off period he will be a good candidate for the mooted Director of Coaching position.

No I disagree that he is a loss to the Aust rugby system.

I feel he should have left last year and made a clean break.
He needs to get away from Aust. and ARU for a period and redefine his coaching approach and after 2-3 seasons in UK or France should be able to come back with something new to contribute.

You have not seen Eddie Jones coach in Australia for the last time - mark my words.

I met an ex pro rugby league player with a close tie to one of the coaching staff in the Reds while I was on holiday last week. He said that the Reds coaching staff were extremely unhappy with Eddies management style and they were in complete dissaray. It appears Eddie is into micro management in the extreme.

So who is on the list for replacements...Deans perhaps?

The Reds list seems OK on paper. I think there will be a few coaches willing to try their hand at turning QLD rugby around.

When does Nucifuras contract with the Blues end?
he may want to come back to Oz with prospects of preparing for a Wallabies post in a few years ?

    What about Ella?

I agree with you there hopep, I reckon there would be plenty of Coaches willing to have a crack at a fit Reds list.
A twenty two like this comes to mind:

    1. Greg Holmes
    2. Stephen Moore
    3. Rodney Blake
    4. James Horwill
    5. Hugh McMenimen
    6. Ben Mowen
    7. David Croft
    8. John Roe

    9. Will Genia
    10. Quade Cooper
    11. Caleb Brown
    12. Berrick Barnes
    13. Lloyd Johansson
    14. Digby Ioane
    15. Chris Latham

    16. Ole Avei
    17. Ben Coutts
    18. Cameron Treloar
    19. Tom McVerry
    20. Nic Berry
    21. Henari Veratau
    22. Charlie Fetoai

Combining a bit of a clean out (Hardman, Cordingley, Walker etc) with a return of some genuine stars from injury (Latham, Holmes, Blake) and an injection of fresh blood (Genia, Cooper, Ioane, Mowen).
The right Coach and a good run of luck on the injury front and the Reds could easily be back in the midfield of the table.

Foley is probably favourite, but Nucifora is off contract. He could be the smokey. Either way, they are both passionate Queenslanders (even if Foley was born in Sydney), and methinks this was a primary ingredient missing with E. Jones. Queensland rugby needs passionate coaches (as well as good skills coaches).
