    Palmyra Snippets

After ten years as Centre and Facilities Manager at Tompkins Park, Jose (Joe) da Costa is retiring on 30 June 2007.

Joe has been invaluable and a rock for not only the Rugby Club, but also the Melville Cricket Club and the Tompkins Park Association. His presence will be greatly missed. His replacement has been appointed and will be announced shortly.

No news yet about the injury on Saturday. Despite enquiry I have not been able to find anything out. Let's hope no news is good news.

Three wise men from the club, Bill Sharp, Todd Charlsey and Stewie McClean, travelled to South Africa recently for ex-first grader Trinity File's wedding. Word has it they spent most of the time in rugby clubs and pubs. They have just returned raving about the place, speaking Africaans, and promising an endless supply of Yarpie props for Palmyra next season.

The next home game is against Perth Bayswater on 12 May. The duty team for the day is second grade. An extra team carton is provided to numb the pain. Thanks to the third and fifth grades for their excellent co-operation in the two home games played to date.

Thursday night dinners are going gangbusters with 50-60 players and supporters tucking into the lasagnas, stews, chicken, curries, spaghetti, roast beef, vegs and salad and whatever else appears on the menu. For $4.00 it's an absolute bargain. This week's menu - minestrone soup, roast beef and vegs.

How good has attendance been at training lately? Over the last few weeks there has regularly been over 100 players at each session. Even the mighty Sixths are approaching a full complement every week despite the predatory practises of the higher grades. Even though the club has extensive grounds, between 6.00-6.30pm on Thursdays when senior and junior training overlaps, it is hard to avoid stepping on the little tackers as they run about underfoot in their enthusiasm.

With the influx of new members, stocks of shorts, sox and other merchandise are temporarily running low until the next order arrives shortly. Please be patient.

The last remaining copies of Mal Siddons' book on the history of Palmyra "For the Love of the Game" have almost run out. Only 400 copies were printed and there are about 30 or so left. Anyone interested in acquiring a copy should contact the club as soon as possible - $35.00 per copy.

Players don't forget your fees are due now. $190.00 seniors, $160.00 colts and students. Social membership is $50.00. Don't wait to be chased. The results of practical and financial co-operation by players and members are showing already across the scoreboard in all grades.
