NEW Zealand and Hurricanes flanker Jerry Collins has movement and feeling in all his limbs, following what was initially thought to be a serious neck injury,

The All Black sustained the injury during his side's 23-13 Super 14 defeat by the Crusaders at Jade Stadium, Christchurch last night.

Collins was injured in the 46th minute when he and fellow flanker Chris Masoe tackled Crusaders centre Rua Tipoki.

Hurricanes media spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said Collins spent the night in Christchurch Hospital, and is due to see a specialist this morning.

A further condition update is expected later today.

Jerry Collins wants to play against the Highlanders on Friday and is desperate to be there when Tana Umaga brings the curtain down on his Super 14 career a week later.

But Collins will have to convince the Hurricanes' medical staff that he has recovered from the neck injury that saw him whisked to hospital after the Hurricanes' 23-13 loss to the Crusaders at Jade Stadium on Friday night.

Collins, 26, spent the night in Christchurch Hospital but flew home with the team on Saturday and was in a remarkably chipper mood.

"I'm good. I could be better, but I'm okay," Collins said, adding he would front at training on Monday with the aim of tackling the Highlanders on Friday.

"I'll be chasing a chance to play. I'll follow the medical advice but I want to play on Friday. I need to play to earn a spot for next week."

Umaga will play his last game for the Hurricanes against the Waratahs on Saturday week, and Collins wants to help farewell his mate in style.

"It will be a special game, so I have to make sure I'm fit enough to play."

If Collins were to play this Friday it would cap a remarkable recovery from a blow that had many fearing he had broken his neck.

Coach Colin Cooper spoke on Sunday of his relief when he was told Collins had full movement, while Collins revealed he was numb for a time down his left side.

"I tried to get up, and I couldn't, so I tried to get up again and I still couldn't. I wanted to get up because when you're lying there like that it freaks people out.

"Then the doc (Ian Murphy) told me to relax and that I wasn't going anywhere quickly."

Collins also revealed that the other players had realised he was in serious danger after he collapsed making a tackle on Crusaders midfielder Rua Tipoki.

Having lined Tipoki up, Collins didn't notice fellow flanker Chris Masoe slam Tipoki from the other side, that impact putting Collins' neck out of alignment.

"The other guys realised I was in trouble and moved the ruck away from me, but it's just one of those freakish things that can happen.

"You go into a tackle and you're neck is off-line."

It is the third time Collins has left Jade Stadium injured. He broke a leg playing there for Wellington in 1999 and, two years later, injured a shoulder during his All Blacks debut against Argentina.

In 2003 he hurt a knee in an awful collision playing against France. Though he played on in that match, the injury was serious.

"I must have the curse of Jade Stadium," Collins laughed.

"It certainly seems to have my number because there's the injuries and last year I had that little incident where the toilet was too far away."
