    Rockingham returns to Premier Rugby

It has been announced today that Rockingham returns to the Western Australian Premier Rugby Competition in 2006.
From the outside of the game in WA, this would appear to be a progressive move with an apparent swelling of interest in the area and an impressive stable of juniors in Representative Teams in the last couple of years.

    Abridged from the Rockingham website-

"Seven Members of Rockingham Rugby Union Club’s Colts team were selected in the WA state Under 19's team for 2005.
Chris Indich, Larry Stockil, Ryan Dawson, AJ Smith, Dudley Cortland, Dean Tyrrell and Leroy McBride competed in the QRU U19 Representative Assembly.
In addition, Quintin Stockil, Glynn Edwards, David Mafi & Arnie Slabber were also selected for the 2005 WA Schoolboys team.
Scrum half Joshua Hanson was selected to the join the WA Under 15 Development Tour to the Gold Coast."

Add to this five Rockingham-bred players having been included in the Western Force Academy and it starts to paint a picture of a region on the rise.

I know we have a few members from the Northern and Eastern Suburbs Clubs at both Premier and A Grade levels, what is your opinion on this promotion?
    Is it warranted?
Is it the right year or should they have waited another year for this player group to mature?
Are there any other A Grade Clubs sitting on the border line for promotion potential?
What will this mean for the A Grade Comp this season?

Looks like they are taking it seriously anyway.
No idea the standard of this years coaches but good to see they are looking around for experience.
Perhaps John Connolly might put his hand up if he doesn't get the Wallabies, just to keep his hand in

... on the 6th day God played rugby and on the 7th day he rested, because he was sore and a little hungover.

So Rockingham have marked their return to Premier Grade with five wins and finished 9th (second last) with a comfortable gap over Wanneroo.
Their Seconds managed one draw to finish stone motherless.
Has this been a good thing for the Premier Comp and the sport in Western Australia?
Will we see a change of Club numbers in the (foreseeable) future in Premier or are these particular Clubs here to stay?

At full strength their 1st grade side are pretty decent, unfortunately their lack of depth in 2nd grade means that both teams suffered and thats why they finished so low.l

Firstly, congratulations to Neddies on their wins yesterday. Hopefully Pally will have the opportunity for a rematch in a couple of weeks.First grade was a great game between two good sides played hard and fairly and in good spirit (I didn't get to see seconds).

Rockingham have done well this year given that it was their first year back in the competition (if you want to be harsh you could say they did better than the Force in their first year, and no one is bagging them ) and given also that they lost an extraordinary number of players to representitive duties at critical points in the season.

Not only did their committee have to deal with day to day club administration but also with a heavy time and financial burden associated wih their move to other grounds next year.

Rockingham have passion and determination and an underlying (perhaps merited ) sense of grievance at the way RugbyWA have dealt with them on many issues and these factors build unity and strength within a club (siege mentality?)

They have put considerably more effort than most other clubs into their juniors and barring futher rapacious poaching by other clubs who don't put in the hard yards, they will soon reap the rewards.

I am confident that Rocky will continue to improve and with some judicious recriuting of their own will be much higher profile next season.

FS, the reason why Rockingham are doing well know, is the strong past history of English migration to that area. Poms teaching young dudes to play rugby

And the shameful thing in WA is that apart from them, and some local Kiwi's, there has been naf all Australian involvement in promoting junior rugby until recently.Until the last decade or so the only inner metropolitan local club to make a real commitment to junior rugby was Associates. Most other clubs, including mine, left it to a handful of parents with little experience and even less training to try and develop potential first class rugby players. The seniors provided little practical or financial support and considered juniors as an unnecessary nuisance, to be tolerated only as an alternative baby sitting service for those that had kids. Good players came from OS.
It was only after Associates, the perennial losers of the 70' and 80's, began to have success substantially through their juniors moving up (and admittedly also through their SAS connections and other factors ) in the 90's and beyond, that other clubs woke up to the importance of junior development.
And the fact is, most haven't even yet caught up to Soaks and Rocky in this aspect. Although they are all now trying, their rewards are still 4 to 5 years away.

So I hope you are not knocking the "Poms" TLH, they were and are doing what WA clubs should have been doing years ago.

Nedlands have been putting a lot of resources into junior development for the past 10 years or so.So much so in fact, like Soaks they have had 2 colts sides for the past 2 years. This year there are over 50 registered colts in the club. The trick is of course is to keep these young players in the game& playing up through the grades.
one problem with junior development in Nedlands is that quite a number of players go to private schools.Once they reach 16 they are obliged to play for their school & are lost to the club system. These schools appear to have little interest in the broader rugby community.Hopefully in the future a satifactory arrangement can be negotiated between Rugby WA & the private school system. It is good to see the effort being put in by Rugby WA in developing rugby in the State schools. There is a long way to go but at least a start has been made.
As Fulvio said it is good to see clubs finally waking up & realising the importance of junior development
