Whatever happened to backrow moves off the scrum?

Who remembers the Tim Gavin, Willy O , Farr Jones moves off the back of the scrum? You don't see a lot of it anymore. Wycliffe Palu's heroic charges from a backward skating scrum have been the most impressive in a decade. Has the brains gone out of rugby in favour of braun. Are coaches so stereotyped that they have outcoached imagination?

I think you will find Chisel that our scrum is in such a state of disrepair that any scrum win is a bonus.

Also its a residue of our previous coaching regime (Eddie Jones) that there was a belief that the only people that can score tries are backs.

It is certainly hard to execute when the locks are falling backwards over the number 8 trying to pick it up. Palu has been doing a staunch job

I reckon the provincial teams (ie the S12/S14 teams) have been instructed by The Head Honcho at the Wallabies of a particular way the Wallabies will be playing and, wherever possible, to incorporate some elements of that into the S12/S14 team play. So, when the S12/14 players get the call up to national duties, they don't have to be taught from scratch.

So, with Eddie trying to focus on backs scoring the tries, some may say the emphasis was taken off the forwards a teeny fraction. other than pick & drive 1 out, set up, pick & drive 1 out, etc.

With Knuckles Connoly being a forwards man from way back, hopefully a change has been sent through all Australian rugby to have effective forwards who can at least hold their own and provide a stable platform for the #9 to distribute, or even better, have the 6, 7 or 8 doing some moves.

    In my opinion...

I think the other problem is that the Flankers no longer have to stay bound to the scrum, see footage of any scrum involving Richie "I'm cheating scrum" McCaw, making it a lot harder to set up any moves of the back row.
Hopefully we will see a return to ref's actually applying the laws of the game this year.

I wouldnt call Richie McCaw a cheat just because he gets away with that. Good luck to him. If Waugh or Smith got away with it - we wouldnt call them cheats.

Exile -- You don't have to call him a cheat, I already did that for you.
I hear what you are saying, whatever you can get away with...

But the problem is he gets away with doing what no one else does, which is moer an issue with the officiating... More to the point I dislike him and hope against hope that he starts getting called for laying all over the ball. However I am not holding my breath!
