    Melrose to coach Western Sydney

    Melrose to coach Western Sydney

    January 17, 2007, c/o Fox Sports

FORMER New South Wales Waratahs assistant coach Brian Melrose has been appointed mentor of Western Sydney's Australian Rugby Championship side in its inaugural season.

Melrose, currently involved with Manly and the Australia Sevens team, brings a wealth of experience that also includes a long association with West Harbour.

Melrose is no stranger to the western region, having played with two of the aligned teams Eastwood and Parramatta.

Made up of Eastwood, West Harbour, Parramatta and Penrith clubs and based at Parramatta Stadium, Melrose says the side has the potential to unite Sydney's greater west.

"It's a diverse region and there's plenty of exciting challenges ahead," Melrose said.

"It's my job to find talent and develop it into a winning team, and there's no doubt that there's plenty of talent out here."

NSWRU CEO Fraser Neill says the Western Sydney outfit has a tailor-made supporter and playing base.

"Western Sydney is one of Australia's greatest breeding grounds," Neill said.

"There's a massive potential for growth in the west and it is vitally important that NSW Rugby is part of that."

Melrose is the third and final head coach appointed in NSW, joining John McKee (Central Coast) and Col Jeffs (Sydney).

Jeffs will be assisted by Scott Bowen and Mark Giacheri.

McKee and Melrose are yet to announce their assistant coaches.

in todays paper it mentions the WA team for the new national comp is to be called "Perth Spirit" and goes on to say that it is already in the trde marks office.
Just wondering whats wrong with perth gold as a name as perth spirit sounds like a drink ala kirip syrup.

Perth Spirit... I think it will grow on you. When it was first put forward that the WA Super 14 team was to be called the Western Force and had a Swan Emblem I was not too sure; but it grew on me and I think it was a great choice now!

Saweet, Ballymore should be used for the A League Soccer (Qld Roar).

But at least it is being used here. I really do like Ballymore, have played there a couple of times, It is a great stadium and I will be supporting The team that is being Played There, which has Ben Tune. Which has a couple of players that I really like from the Reds.

true shaun i also wasnt too keen on the name and strip of the Force and would still perfer to see the home and away strips swaped but apart from that it has grown on me. But i still think Peth Gold is a better name with a good history.

Haha, Kirup Syrup! There's a flagon of that sitting in a mates house in town....only one glass consumed.
I think he's saving it to bait some dogs with

    Re names:
I imagine they will have reserved the "Perth Gold" at the status it is, the WA State Amateur XV basically, as the entity that would play in the TAS etc.
Perth Spirit is yet another airy fairy fag name that belongs in round ball, bloody hell get something with some guts to it!!!
Warts and melanoma’s grow on you, fairy names like "Spirit" just irritate you to tears
And for the record, I still regret the name "Western Force".......there, I said it!

mm I'm thinking Spirit...not such a good idea... needs to be a name you can shout out at the top of your lungs... I don't see myself shouting out "PPPEEERRRTTHHHH SSSPPPPIIIRRRIIITTTT!!!" I can only see strange men in the crowd with flowers in his hair shouting out that nonsense!!!

"Perth Spirit" and "Western Force", proudly brought to you by faceless souless moronic marketing "gurus" in small partitioned office's.
"Krushers", now there's a name with meat on the bones
