Nine killed in cattle grazing clash

AT least nine people were killed in a shootout sparked by an argument over a herd of cattle grazing on private land in central Pakistan, police said today.

The clash happened yesterday in the rural Bhakkar district of Punjab province after members of a nomadic ethnic Pashtun tribe set up their tents on farmland belonging to a local clan.

The landowner sent armed men to evict the nomads because he said their cattle were damaging the land and violence erupted, local police chief Raja Mushtaq said.

Seven people died on the spot while two more died in the hospital, he said.

Police arrested nine people in connection with the fighting.
