    All Time Rankings

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I am sure Coach will delete if that is the case.

What do you think about this, 2 AB's in the top three places...is that justified?

Personally W-J McBride is better than 8th in my book and I'm sure many of you would place Mr Eales higher than 17 (first placed Aussie!).

Those rankings are way off, I can not see John Eales out of the top ten.

These lists bemuse me. How can you compare players from different eras playing under different rules against different opposition. Is it any surprise that the top of the list is made up mostly of modern day players? We only see players of 30,40,50 years ago on degraded, short, movie clips. How can you raise a comparison from that to a player you have seen in the flesh or on modern TV?

Better we enjoy what we have today and leave greatness to be assessed alongside its peer.

More to the point: 2006 the game is professional with everything that entails.

Pre 1990s, the Laws actually prohibited payment for playing (someone will correct me but I recall it was actually law number 1?) and defined the amateur status of the game, the unions and players involved.

So how can you compare the two and the quality of player each system produces?

Steady now guys, it's not my list so don't shoot the messenger.

Shaun, good to get a view though your reasons would be more informative than a throw-away statement.

Bob, I think the site shows that points are awarded for each facet of the game, but who judges the score I don't know.

Sid, I don't see what the change from amateur to professional has to do with it unless you are suggesting an individual only plays well if its for money I think the improvements in training and the ability to devote one's whole life to the game clearly helps but the sort of guys included on this list have always been "professional" in every other sense of the word. I dare you to confront Willie-John McBride and suggest he was less of a player because he didn't get paid

Fulvio, that's an opinion and your entitled to it but its naive to think that we don't compare apples and pears all the time. Every game and season is different even if played by the same teams and players but it never stops us comparing how our team did against another last year, or how much better we played last week. This list simply exagerates things and covers a much longer timeframe.

look thats the list not live with it. There is no possible way everyone is going to agree exact on who should be where on the rankings.

good to see Johnno at 6

The "list" will always be biased by the origin of the authors.
The only ones I would pay attention to are either by ex players or voting by media around the globe.
I agree that it is possible to compare across the generations as you are comparing how good player A was in his generation to how good player B was in his. Mark Ella for example was an absolute master in his compared to his peers, where as Larkham has competition. To me that would indicate that Ella was the "better" five eight, regardless of when he played.

Those polls are great when they rate your guy high and they suck when they don't!

It's possible to compare players from different times but it's very difficult. When you see a player on a regular basis you tend to rate him higher because you see everything he does. In general athletes today are bigger, faster, & stronger. Everyone has an opinion. How many different answers would you get if you ask who's the best player in the world today? Or if you had to pick one guy to build a team around who would you choose?

Pretty meaningless list imho. Where's Hugo and Serge for example. Plus they didn't include the immortal Donut Dunning in the top ten, oh wait that's my list for brain explosions (Rodders recently added).

Welcome back Jethro, might be a good start to another thread, who would you pick from all current International players to be your foundation player in a team?
In fact, consider it started! http://thewholeforce.com/showthread....6327#post26327
