All Blacks name stars to sit out Super 14

New Zealand are pushing ahead with plans to rest most of their star players, including All Blacks captain Richie McCaw and fly half Dan Carter, for the first part of next year's Super 14.

    NEWS LTD THREATENS NZRU

    Rugby e News.
    Thursday 14 September 2006

The New Zealand Rugby Union is sticking to its guns over its plan to shield 22 All Blacks from the first half of the 2008 Super 14 competition despite disquiet from one of the world's biggest multi-national media organisations, News Limited.

NZRU Chairman Jock Hobbs is unperturbed by criticism from News Ltd director of corporate affairs Greg Baxter, who has said the heavyweight SANZAR purseholders will assess the combined commercial value of the absent 22 All Blacks with a view to filing a compensation claim against the NZRU.

Hobbs met with News Ltd chief operating officer Peter Macourt last Friday in Sydney where he put the NZRU position to the News Ltd chief and apologised for not consulting them prior to the announcement, citing extenuating circumstances. Hobbs, a lawyer by background, said the NZRU had sought advice from a Queen's Counsel and was very sure of its legal position. He refuted claims by Baxter that contractual agreements had been broken and that compensation is owed.

"He wasn't at the meeting and I've never met the man, (Baxter) has made comments (post meeting) about what happened at the meeting, which are factually incorrect," Hobbs was quoted in the New Zealand Herald.

On Tuesday night Baxter made further comments to the media reiterating that News also wouldn't back down. "Our position hasn't changed all the way through, we're very disappointed with the way the NZRU has gone about this."

And yesterday the South African Rugby Football Union confirmed its own World Cup project for 24 contracted Springboks to sit out the remainder of the 2006 Currie Cup. However, while accepted by home provinces, the move hasn't been entirely untroubled. A SARU request for three players released from national duties earlier, De Wet Barry, Hanyani Shimange and Wayne Julies, to be included in Currie Cup games, has been mysteriously rejected by the provincial chief executives.

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
