Junior Wallabies' 2019 prep starts with state training squads

    by Staff Writer

The Junior Wallabies have named an 87-man extended training squad for 2019 after the recent U19 Rugby Championship.

This is the first squad named in the new U20s structure, with October's URC replacing the Super 20s competition that was run at the start of the Super Rugby season.

A host of players have also been included in the squad from July's Australian Schools competition, giving some 18-year-olds their first taste of U20s expectations.

The group will go into state-based camps before a condensed group comes together in Canberra to kick off the 2019 campaign proper.

Junior Wallabies coach Jason Gilmore said January would be when the side's focus really sharpens.

"This wider training squad that we have selected comes off the back of several weeks of national competition, both at the U19 Rugby Championship as well as the Australian Schoolboys," he said.

ďFrom here the boys will be linking up with their state-based academies where they will continue to train until we assemble in January at the Australian Institute of Sport where our preparations will really ramp up.Ē

The Junior Wallabies will play in next year's Oceania U20s and the World Rugby U20s Champs in Argentina.

Extremely proud of the WA lads!! Go well guys!!

RA do make a contribution to the high performance, i.e. Future Force, program, so you are right TIF - they havenít yet abandoned the high performance pathway in WA!

Less than 10% of the squad are from WA.
37 players from Qld and 7 from WA. Brisbane City 9 beat WA U19 by 1 point?
    23 from NSW

Oh I know, JSJ. But considering how much RA would love WA to just shut up and go away quietly, the fact that we have as many as 7 in the squad is a real triumph I reckon!

NSW and QLD had 2 teams in the comp.
But looking purely at the results, one would expect something like

27 from Qld, 20 from NSW, 15 from ACT, 12 from WA, 12 from "Barbarians" and 5 from Rebels = 87 total
(I dont know where the "Barbarians" fit into the states)

For such a tiny place, the ACT is very well represented.

Was it last year, that ACT schoolboys won the schoolboys, and then were largely ignored, when the Australian schoolboys team was selected full of NSW boys? ACT must be doing something right.

And the Rebels were belted by everybody except the Sydney Rays.

Yeah ACT Schoolboys won last year, some of the players past over for selection were in Year 11. ACT based kids do a year 10 certificate so they can leave schools then with a results cert. This rules out a lot of kids as they are no longer at school. I don't think the year 10 leaving rate is not as high as it used to be,
