What a wasted opportunity. WA ticked all the boxes and was exactly where it said it was going to be in 10 years yet they axe us for the Rabble and then spent that fortune it has costed to keep it afloat.

If they spent the same sort of money that they did in Melbourne into WA then the game here would have reached dizzying heights. It would have boomed so hard the other codes would have been terrified at the momentum. Instead an entire decade has been wasted on a city the rest of the rugby community doesnt give a shit about. Now their WSR roadblocks, bring on Alan Jones , Bob Dwyer and Brett Papsworth. Let's just leave this charade and move on, I bet these blokes will atleast have some empathy towards the West and some knowledge of how to run a code for the people, not for the north shore boys club.

    Wayne Smith's article on this.

No World Series Rugby team for Western Sydney

    WAYNE SMITH

There will be no officially-approved World Series Rugby team based in western Sydney next season with Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest meeting obstacles at all levels, with Waratahs CEO Andrew Hore insisting the turnaround was too tight to get a professional team up and running.

And the news from the far side of the Tasman is just as bad with all indications being that New Zealand Rugby also will block a Kiwi team participating in the proposed eight-team WSC.

With the future of Super Rugby and indeed the course of international rugby still to be determined, the view is that no resources should be put into WSC until both have been resolved.

“There won’t be a World Series Rugby team based there next year,” Hore said of the proposal to base a WSC franchise in western Sydney. “There is a lot of work to be done around western Sydney and no-body is saying no to that. I think it is just making sure it is done in an effective way. Our whole focus is on unifying the game so anything we do needs to be tied to our new governance model and has the full support of the rugby community. Otherwise you just end up with another fracture.

“That is still open for discussion but everyone is of the opinion it could all be too quickly. And of course you have 2020 on the horizon and the renegotiations of where rugby will be after that.

“We had one meeting with his (Forrest’s) representatives. Everyone is of the agreement that you can have a professional team built on sand. It just doesn’t work. So all the other variables that make a team like that sustainable and even potentially whether it will go ahead at all…..it needs further discussion.

To try to turn around and get a professional team in place by next March … nobody has got the resources, probably outside of Twiggy’s group….at the end of the day, we have to look after 100,000 rugby players in our own state with everything else going on. It’s a lot of work.”

So after Andrew Forrests big announcement during the Panasonic wild knights half time break we are left with nothing new. We have some derailed plans by the RA and NSWRU that probably wont come to fruition. We dont know next years make up, will it still be 8 teams or 6 now?, and it looks like now that the World Rugby meeting has finished RugbyAustralia are going about their usual shenanigans. Cowards. Just f%^k off Clyne.

The trouble with joining those blokes is that for years Jones and Papworth have preached that the highest tier of rugby after the Wallabies should be the Shute Shield. Now, a leopard can change it's spots, but I'd rather hear what their plans are before walking into the leopard cage.

Andrew Forrest is a businessman. He'll have a back-up plan, and he will want to get everything signed off and finalised before announcing to the public, because that's the way business works. So unless there are leaks (such as the coach leaking that he's going to coach the Western Sydney side), the first we'll hear about is likely to be when the WSR unveils it's 'x' number of teams, locations, 2019 schedule, coaches, and possibly a handful of marquee players.

No Australia and no New Zealand? Chibi's doing a little jig.

Maybe a bit of the attitude we had with the world cup sub-hosting rights.

Right or wrong, at least they now know. If they want to buy in later, bidding competitively against whoever else might be interested, fine. But once things are running, I'd make signed approval from the respective governing body a pre-requisite for even being considered. Frankly, I think having both RA and NZR outside the tent initially is probably the best move for the competition anyway.

But if this now gives certainty, GTF on with it and focus.

And maybe we can rack up a few titles before they join...

I still cant believe the backwards thinking from NSWRU and RA. They are steering a sinking ship and rather than open up other revenue streams and expand into a neglected part of Sydney they have thrown in the towel. You sometimes wonder if there is a master plan by the powers running the code here to destroy rugby in Australia. There sure isnt a "plan" to resuccitate it.

WHY????? This is all just conjecture from sH1t journalists and clowns such as TWAS.

It was only 2 weeks ago that the following was put on the Western Force page.

    The situation probably hasn't changed.........

Those spots are there on the record for anyone who cares to see them. Jones in particular can turn from friend to strident enemy if he thinks its in his interests. He can change his perception of what is fact at any time. But it doesn't cost anything to listen - warily.

We should be cautious about what we wish for.

The primary focus of the Three Amigos is on rugby in the two Heartland states, and while it is unlikely that they will succeed with their Clarion Call, there are other factions in both the NSWRU and QRU who think that they can do a better job of running rugby union in Australia than the present ARU/RA board, and we may not find many friends of WA Rugby and/or WSR in those factions.

It is either that or go broke under the current parasitical Clown College. From reading the letter they want to get rid of the nominations committee along with other bureaucracy which is costing the game that is a good thing. The ship has sailed for the clubs to go back up to the third tier. Papworth knows this and given that Dwyer is getting on the ground him to.

The levies that are strangling clubs is also mentioned in this letter. That is important.

Rugby in WA is intended to go back under the community ownership model that was stalled by the RA's axing fiasco which will mean that the RA will never get their grubby mits on the Force as the owners being the supporters will never vote to kill themselves.

    Twiggy has a plan B

Roadblocks won’t stop eight-team World Series Rugby competition

World Series Rugby is expected to debut with eight teams next year despite roadblocks being thrown out to slow down expansion sides in western Sydney and New Zealand.

Rugby Australia and Rugby NSW have said they cannot support the Sydney side because the turnaround for the March kick-off is too short. The New Zealand Rugby Union has also aired the same concerns about the inclusion of a WSR Kiwi team.

But mining magnate Andrew Forrest, who is bankrolling the new competition and the Western Force, has not been deterred and is forging ahead with the tournament.

WSR was already planning to expand to 10 teams in 2020 and if the Sydney and NZ teams are not included next year two alternative teams from the Asia Pacific region are likely to be brought in.

They would join the Force, two sides from Japan and one each from Fiji, Singapore, and Hong Kong in an eight team competition battling for a $1 million prize purse.

WSR has been given the tick approval by World Rugby’s executive committee, recommending approval to its full council for rubber-stamping, subject to regulatory and governance criteria.

Super Rugby broadcast deals end in 2020 and no doubt RA are wary of any new competition moving into their landscape before they can lock away contracts.

Forrest’s Minderoo organisation said it had “parties ready and willing” to support a western Sydney team for the 2019 timeframe but it was up to RA and NSW to let it happen.

“RA and NSWRU have discussed with Minderoo the possibility of establishing the Western Sydney team in 2020 instead of 2019 to allow them to do what they believe is the required planning to ensure the team is successful and integrates into the NSW rugby system,” Minderoo said in a statement.

“Minderoo continues to work with RA and NSWRU to enable the establishment of the Western Sydney at the most appropriate time.

“We would welcome a team into the competition as early as the 2019 season if its establishment was able to occur faster – but whether that happens is up to RA and NSWRU, in discussion with the parties who are ready and willing to support such a team in that timeframe.”
