    Wallabies v South Africa 8 Septebmer 2018

Foley axing part of Cheika plan to "shake it up"
    by Sam Phillips

Michael Cheika says a desire to "shake it up" was behind his decision to bench long-time flyhalf Bernard Foley for the Wallabies' must win clash with the Springboks on Saturday.

Kurtley Beale will start at flyhalf for the first time since the second Bledisloe game in 2014, with Matt Toomua pulling on the No. 12 jersey in a new look midfield.

The radical switch playmaking switch came as Cheika also made a host of changes elsewhere.

In the starting side, Rory Arnold replaces Izack Rodda as a starting lock and Israel Folau returns from injury at fullback, and on the bench, Taniela Tupou has also been ruled fit and replaces veteran Sekope Kepu.

Ned Hanigan replaces Pete Samu and Joe Powell is back-up halfback due to Nick Phipps' rib injury.

The biggest talking point was the removal of Foley, however.

The NSW playmaker has started the last 51 Tests he has featured in and has missed just two Tests since he last came off the bench - the same Test Beale last started at No. 10 in 2014.

"I suppose I just wanted to shake it up a little bit," Cheika said.

"I think we've had some good things that have happened in the games, I know that hasn't been brought out but there's been some good things and I think that Toomua's return, he's shown a lot of good things as well around the place and he's brought some of that on-field as well.

"I just thought I'd try a different combination and give them an opportunity together."

It's a move which signals a tactical shake up of sorts, though Toomua's game does fit the two playmaker attacking model the Wallabies have run for the entirety of Cheika's tenure.

Cheika said Foley had responded to his demotion well.

"We sat down and had a good talk about it. I think he's showed he's certainly no dummy-spitter by the way he trained today," Cheika said.

"He was still up the front, still going to have a big part to play in the game - finishing the game without a doubt. He took it hard but he showed the quality of the person that he is the way he got back on the training paddock today and led the way."

Asked what he'd conveyed to Foley about the things he's doing wrong in his game, Cheika said: "It's not as much doing things wrong as opposed to fulfilling the potential you have. He's not doing anything wrong in particular, but I feel he could be playing better because he's a quality player and he has shown that for us on many occasions.

"It's one of the rare times this has happened if not the first time. This is an opportunity for him to get back to focusing a little bit more on himself and not as much on the team and bringing his performance up."

Folau's inclusion at fullback triggering a shuffle of sorts.

Dane Haylett-Petty shifts back to the right wing pushing Jack Maddocks back to the bench and squeezing Tom Banks out of the 23 altogether.

Arnold will pack down alongside Adam Coleman in his first Test of the year, with Rodda dropping to the bench and pushing Rob Simmons out of the squad.

The Wallabies face the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday September 8 at 8pm AEST, broadcast LIVE on FOX SPORTS, Channel Ten and RUGBY.com.au radio. Buy tickets here.

Pocock ruled out, Samu joins Wallabies side to play Boks

Today at 12:53 PM The Rugby Championship
    by Beth Newman

David Pocock has been ruled out of Saturday’s Brisbane Test with a neck injury.

New Zealand targeted Pocock heavily in the breakdown in their two Bledisloe Tests and the Kiwis’ treatment left the flanker with neck soreness that he is yet to fully shake off.

After the Auckland Bledisloe Test, Pocock could barely move his neck and nearly a fortnight later he is still suffering stiffness amid concerns for his long-term health.

The flanker will be replaced in the starting side by Pete Samu.

Pocock’s absence is a major blow for the Wallabies, with the backrower arguably their form player of 2018 after a year’s sabbatical in 2017.

The door was open for Pocock to pounce in the breakdown in Brisbane against the Springboks after the Springboks benched hooker and prolific fetcher Malcolm Marx.

This will be Samu’s first Test start after first linking up with the Australian camp in June.

Wallabies captain Michael Hooper said Pocock's absence would be a big blow to the team but had full faith in Samu to step up.

"I'm very disappointed for David and the team, he's been in outstanding form all year and he's a big leader," he said.

"Even just for him - he really wants to be out there, he's given himself every chance, he's been ticking all the boxes but it hasn't come to light.

"It's unfortunate but Pete's coming in, Pete Samu and he's been doing a great job in the cameos he's been having off the bench."

Samu came from outside the 23 to start, ahead of replacement forward Ned Hanigan and fellow squad backrower Caleb Timu.

Hooper said it was just a matter of a like-for-like replacement option.

"It's a different combination there of course. I've been very impressed with Pete and his performances throughout the year," he said.

"It's a straight swap just in terms of how our plays go and how we look to change the game.

"Without changing too much, he comes in and fits in that role nicely."

The Wallabies take on the Springboks on Saturday September 8, kicking off at 8pm AEST, LIVE on FOX SPORTS, Channel Ten, Macquarie Radio and via RUGBY.com.au RADIO. Buy tickets here.

Folau ruled out of Brisbane Test with ankle injury

    by Beth Newman

Wallabies fullback Israel Folau has been ruled out of Saturday's Test against South Africa with an ankle injury.

The fullback injured his ankle against the All Blacks in Sydney and missed the Wallabies' Auckland Test with the issue.

He was on track to return to the side in Brisbane but pulled up sore on Saturday morning and pulled out of the clash.

Folau's 11th-hour withdrawal is the second major blow for the Wallabies after flanker David Pocock was ruled out with a neck injury on Friday.

Dane Haylett-Petty will move to fullback with Jack Maddocks on the wing and Tom Banks will come into the 23.

Folau's absence will only intensify the pressure on the Wallabies in a must-win clash against the Springboks in Brisbane.

The Wallabies have won just one of their five Tests this year and sit last in the Rugby Championship after two rounds.

The Wallabies take on South Africa on Saturday September 8, kicking off at 8pm AEST, LIVE on FOX SPORTS, Channel Ten, Macquarie Radio and RUGBY.com.au RADIO. Buy tickets here.

DHP is a better full back anyway. A fit Maddocks might have it over a hamstrung Folau, but once again why not select an actual winger at 14?

Beale usually plays 12, Toomua 10. Under Clown it's reversed of course

Hodge has never played 13 until the Wallabies

Samu at 8? FFS select an actual 8!

Tui is a lock not a flanker

I hear ya Bison, but I really think Beale needs time at 10 before RWC, he seems to me the logical option and has the skill set, but I'm not sure if that is why he is at 10 this week or if he has been put there like others due to injury. I wonder how different that team would be if we had a whole other team of players to choose from, you know five SR players instead of four to choose from. I'm sure if Deegs was in a SR team he would at least be getting some bench time right now.
