Munster set to confirm Wessels as new boss

Munster set to confirm Wessels as new boss

Munster are poised to confirm former Western Force head coach David Wessels as Rassie Erasmus' successor.
The 36-year-old, who has previously worked with Erasmus as a consultant analyst during the pair's time with the Stormers, is understood to have already been in Limerick for an interview and the province are now ready to get the deal over the line.
The South African has been on the look-out for a new job after the Force were cut from Super Rugby and although he was linked with the Melbourne Rebels, Munster are believed to have already identified him as the man they want to lead them.

Erasmus is due to return home to South Africa to begin his new role as the Springboks' director of rugby in December and it is expected that Wessels will be in situ in the coming weeks to begin the handover.
The IRFU's performance director David Nucifora confirmed that Munster are currently talking to just one potential candidate and are "close" to confirming the deal.

"Are we getting close to getting someone? Yes we are," Nucifora said.
"I'm hopeful we will have an answer to this sooner rather than later so we can engineer a really well-delivered handover between the two coaching groups. You don't usually get that chance, this is a coordinated approach.

"We've spoken to a number of people over the last number of months. We are well advanced at the moment. I'd be hopeful that we'd have news for you in the short-term. Hopefully it would be permanent (appointment).
"We're working diligently on it. Yes, we feel we're getting close to doing something but in any negotiation things can move at the last minute, you never quite know until it's done but we feel that we're close. We're making good progress.

"At the moment we're talking to one person, but we've spoken to multiple over a period of time. But at the moment we're talking to one so that's why I can say we are getting closer."

Please let it be true. I personally think going to the NH for a couple of years until SANZAAR falls apart would be the best thing for his career.

So would that mean we never see them in WA again?

In all of the discussions floating around, I am led to believe this is short term...perhaps until 2020...Blood loves Perth and we love him. Once we get back on our feet, hopefully we have deep enough pockets to bring him back. He deserves this.

Typically Munster senior/head coaches sign a three season deal or two seasons with an option of another one. There is also a six month release clause if he agrees to another position while under contract. That would tie in till the end of the Sanzaar tv deal.

I mentioned on the other thread that Munster have another role to fill and logic would suggest that is a perfect fit for Barakat who has previously coached in Ireland.

Munster have too many outside backs for DHP to go. Simon Zebo can't even get a start at the moment. Coleman is still linked I don't know how long for as Munster are targeting Tadhg Beirne from the Scarlets who is excellent. Beirne is playing in the row with ex Force Academy prospect Jake Ball.

Better that than seeing them at the rebels though.

Great news!! I lived in Ireland for a couple of years and loved it. Still wanted to come back to Perth though so fingers crossed as Hansie said we see him and his family back 😊

    Congrats Dave.

I'm still fuming at what the ARU and their co-conspirators have done but I'm more gutted at not seeing what Dave Wessels and his squad could have done. No matter what good outcomes transpire in future, that has been ripped away. I just hope the Munster games will be on Fox. Got a new team to follow.

Go well coach. Hope Munster have room for some players to go with you.

Munster matches are televised on BeIN aka Soccer Sports. Unfortunately since they brought out Setanta their live broadcasts are heavily Soccer focused.
