Nah, they like the number 3 so they'll relocate the Brumbies to NSW.

Go in hard from every possible angle Shasta, GIGS20, LOU, Alison and others. I have submitted my own 17 questions about the past and future.

Do I sense some nervous and slightly better co-operative behavior from Clyne,Eales & co? Suddenly having meetings with Twiggy, Wellborn & co and little committee formed to try to assist the IPRC etc Got to keep the heat on them for the next month while they are in the spotlight in front of the senators. Wring as many concessions out of them as possible. Wallaby selections direct from IPRC without playing Super etc.

I agree, I think that Clyne and co are trying to redirect attention from the senate inquiry to the good news stories - classic narcissist behaviour

The Australian Rugby Union still has not made a decision on *whether it will relax the salary cap this year in the wake of the Western Force’s culling from Super Rugby, which is causing confusion for the Melbourne Rebels and angst for everyone else.

It is understood that the Rebels still hope to work eight or nine high-profile Force players into their roster, although the whole process is stalled at present by *the reluctance of former Force coach Dave Wessels to commit himself to Melbourne while things are still so uncertain in Perth with Andrew Forrest’s bold venture of a new competition.

The expectation is that the Force players will follow wherever Wessels leads them but, if he does indeed choose to accept the Rebels coaching role, that could be when the complications really begin for the Melbourne club.

In particular, Wallabies pair Adam Coleman and Dane Haylett-Petty could pose problems. Coleman is understood to have committed to the Rebels in the event the Force goes under while Haylett-Petty is keeping his options open, but there seems no way Melbourne can sign them both without breaking the salary cap.

There are, as well, other Force players with recent Wallabies experience on offer, with hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, winger Curtis Rona and training squad member Billy Meakes looking to be placed.

At present the cap is set at $5 million but the ARU must decide whether to relax it for the 2018 *season to allow those Perth *players desired by the remaining four Super Rugby franchises to move without problems. Conversely, any relaxation could just apply to the Rebels alone.

The Melbourne club finished with the wooden spoon in this year’s 18-team competition but any sympathy other clubs might have felt for them and for the *suffering their players were put through while the five-months process of sorting out which team would be culled effectively evaporated when they signed Will Genia.

The Wallabies Test halfback had made it unmistakably clear that he had left his French club, Stade Francais, with the sole intention of returning to Queensland but the Reds, initially assured that he wasn’t coming home, had already signed three halfbacks. Even when Genia became available, they decided there was no way they could breach their salary cap by signing him, which opened the door for the Rebels to pounce.

If the Rebels were allowed to take liberties with the salary cap to take Genia on board, and then were given leave to stretch it *further by signing Coleman and possibly Haylett-Petty, there is sure to be consternation from the other states.

The issue has been added to the agenda for the next high performance meeting of the state directors, where no doubt the issue of the Rebels grabbing the pick of the Force squad — they have already signed Test props Tetra Faulkner and Ben Daley — will also be given a robust airing. Certainly on paper, the Rebels have vaulted from one of the least imposing rosters in Super Rugby to among the best.

Also discussed will be the issue of whether squad sizes can be increased this year to further smooth the resettlement of Force players.

If any of the things in that article happen, I will absolutely let rip at the Senate inquiry!!!

Surely a 5-year-old could have foreseen that 5 into 4 does not go! Especially when you add to the mix overpaid, over-the-hill, homesick cry babies returning from Europe making selfish demands.

At this rate, if the ARU has anything whatsoever to do with the IPRC I'm afraid I'll not be supporting it. It'll be community rugby only for me.

Surely the ESRU would have put a plan in place for what happens once the Force is cut? Oh, sorry, stupid thought....

You'd think that this article adds a bit more fuel to the Senate enquiry? (Edit: Alison beat me to it!)

I will be really pissed if the ARU let this happen, The money is for grassroots not VIC rugby,, Just shows the spread sheet was nothing to do with present squads and player retention,, I thought VIC Rugby put up the better proposal to stay in the comp,, Had Sponsor,Players Coaches and were set ready to go.. Just shows the whole thing is a sham..

Can't see the Rebel's request gaining any traction.

The EARU want the Rebels to fold as part of the big picture.

The ARU are committed to having 4 teams in the comp. They can't let the Rebels fold. The ARU will have to agree to whatever it takes to keep the Rebels afloat which will mean more financial handouts if that's what they need.
Is TG going to run a book on how soon into the new season the Rebels ask for more money?

The ARU also committed to paying the contract of any Force player who wanted to stay within Australian rugby. They not only sign-off on all contracts, but owned the Force, so knew the exact dollar value of all of our players' contracts. They should have known whether they could pay all the players within the salary cap of the remaining 4 teams. If they can't fit those contracts into the salary cap then they have a choice; either relax the cap for 1-2 years for sides with ex-Force players, or admit that they made a commitment that they couldn't keep.

Of course, I don't expect they planned for this, even when they claimed that all contracted Force players would be required to remain in Australia, as they are a half-cocked bunch of wankers who make FIFA look competent and trustworthy.

That would be unfair and predatory, he wouldn't need to pay anyone if the asked before the start of the season. Judging how this shit goes, I would assume they're already in secret talks.

What a crock! The Rebels have been given every chance of being successful - $30 million extra, player concessions on start up, the great ARU swindle of WA - all designed to manufacture success at the expense of others. Now they want more? Get fucked Melbourne. Your piece of shit team led by your piece of shit administrators have fucked Australian Rugby to the point of crisis and insolvency. Melbournes only interest is using legal technicalities to enrich itself with no regard for the consequence. How people like Rob Clarke are allowed anywhere near a Super Rugby franchise after all of his fuckups as an ARU administrator is disgraceful.
And these sorts of ridiculous demands on the ARU by its member bodies is what is wrong with Australian Rugby. Every East Coast state is in it for themselves. We have the states holding the ARU to ransom. The franchises have no reason to operate in profit as the ARU is on the hook. The franchises have no reason to collaborate as they can pass the buck to the ARU. The franchises have no reason to focus on development as they can pass the buck back to the ARU. The franchises have no reason to improve their Super Rugby performance as they only have to win a conference, not a win a top 8 spot. The franchises have no reason to push community engagement because they can pass the buck back to the ARU. The franchises have no reason to do anything except for sit back, watch some rugby and blame the ARU for their failings even though the ARU gives them millions each year.
This is also the reason the ARU is so ineffective as a national body. They do not control their own finances. They may budget x amount for Super Rugby but in reality their budget is whatever the franchises feel like spending. If the ARU doesn't stump up the money then the ARU is on the hook from the broadcasters for not providing their share of content towards the tournament. And the silliest thing is, RugbyWA were the only franchise holders who took on the responsibilities of running a Super Rugby franchise properly yet were swindled out of their license.
This is why we need a Senate Inquiry into the ARU. The ARU needs to be forced to restructure so it is back in control of its finances. The situation of the states controlling the finances and the states being able to shirk responsibility by blaming the ARU for the shortcomings of the state administrators has to change. Clyne is right that Super Rugby is unsustainable for the ARU but we can't forget that the ARU has gotten itself into this situation through handing away their power.

A Senate Inquiry won't find anyone guilty. It will make findings related to the Terms of Reference and might make recommendations that the ARU can choose to heed or ignore. Most Senate Inquiry reports end up on the shelf with little discernible value and given the small amount of Federal dollars given to the ARU the Senate is quite a bit more bark than bite in this situation.

The real benefit of such an inquiry though is the attention it will generate and the discomfort it can cause. Senators take their role as reviewers very seriously and if the ARU is unable to answer questions, or pisses around they will be slammed. That is about the best we can hope for.
