When Western Force legend Matt Hodgson farewells his club in Saturday night’s Super Rugby match against the Waratahs, one of his biggest fans will be too anxious to watch.
Hodgson’s mother Anne Maree will be wandering around nib Stadium with her grandsons Hunter and Buddy, occasionally checking the score, hoping her son can end his final game in one piece.
But that is unlikely for someone who has already shed so much blood for his side that his injuries read like a casualty ward list, highlighted by 33 broken noses, a compressed fracture of the cheekbone and having an ear almost ripped off.
Anne Maree will be part of a guard of honour of family, friends and former teammates for his 140th and last game for the club. But after that she will be off for a stroll.
