Fair point Shasta, however I personally believe that there is enough there for a referee to end up awarding a scrum for accidental offside for what happened.

    Facts are:

It is a kick off so players will be in front of others due to not knowing where the ball will be kicked

Ignoring the fact that Read gained advantage from being offside at the kick off, while trying to contest for the ball Read makes contact in the air with the Lions player (Ruled to be fair by TMO)

Ball appears to go slightly forward (would love a slow mo view of that) and directly hits the lions player who only momentarily catches it as a reflex hence no intent of using his position unfairly. Had he not caught the ball the ball would have bounced off him in the direction of his try line.

So for me, the decision to call this an accidental offside is absolutely correct to start with. The refefee's mistake was to blow his whistle for a penalty too hastily.

Now had he allowed play on and whoever it was from the AB that picked the ball and potentially score between the sticks as suggested, ref or TMO would have potentially had a look at offside at the kick off.

Again, haven't watched it. Actually deliberately avoiding it now.

Based upon shastas post, if read was ACTUALLY offside, why did AR graces not add that to the conversation, since it was more in the purview of the ar role and actually added something to the discussion, rather than throwing a third interpretation onto something that had already been interpreted.

I'm fine with the referees for a game working as a panel to get the decision right, particularly when the game has been stopped to make that decision but surely the players involved being offside (or not) should be part of that process.

True Gigs, not sure why Read being obviously offside from a kick off was not picked up. Even wingers sometimes do not make it to the receiving player in time, now a #8 at the 78th minute mark of a Test match.

It's the whole process that Poite used ,what don't some people understand, what happened earlier is irrelevant, much like Gigs opinion when he hasn't even seen it.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on.

It might help if some of them did a basic comprehension course. I'm a bit confused as to why a school teacher is among them though.

Lions tour: Opinion - Let the media put their hands up as one - we failed you NZ
    09/07/2017
    Brad Lewis
OPINION: It was the series we would never lose against a composite side made up of the best of the British Isles, coached by a Kiwi who had never beaten an All Black side in his career.

So where did it all go wrong? I asked myself that question about 20 minutes after the final whistle last night - how in the blue hell did we not win this thing?

When my partner got home from a night out with her friends, she asked me what I thought of the game. She quizzed me on something that I found myself contemplating for the next two hours while I struggled to get to sleep.

"But I thought they were supposed to be really s**t," she said.

Yes they were. Or at least that's what I had told her. Then it came to me - is this all my fault?

I failed my partner; I failed my mum, and I failed my friends who, for some reason, because of my experience in sports media, believe I am some sort of oracle when it comes to the All Blacks.

So I found myself sitting in bed thinking about that and came up with three reasons why the media (and you can firmly plant me in that category) failed the New Zealand public in regards to the Lions Test series.

    1. We convinced you Warren Gatland's style of play was awful and he was fighting a battle he couldn't win against the messiah known as Steve Hansen.

Let me say this before I answer. The decision to plaster a clown cartoon of the Lions coach on the front page of a newspaper only ultimately achieved one thing - it pissed off Gatland and his men.

Throughout the past six weeks, planted all over our sports media have been stories surrounding the mind game battle between Shag and Gats. The general theme suggested that Gatland was fighting a battle he couldn't win. Well, he sure as hell got the last laugh didn't he?

Gatland is an extremely talented coach who took Wales to within an inch, literally, of making a World Cup final in 2011. Yes, at times he has played crash-bash midfield rugby. I even heard a parody of Oasis hit, 'Wonderwall' called 'Warren Ball'.

But wait a second. Do we not remember Ma'a Nonu, Frank Bunce or Joe Stanley? All crash-ball specialists.

Gatland outcoached Hansen in Wellington and, at worst, was his equal in Auckland last night. Despite all the flak he copped from both sides of the press, his reputation is ultimately trending upwards after a series draw.

    2. We told you the Lions players just weren't that good.

This is the one that grates me the most. I question the amount of foreign rugby some of us actually ingest. Personally I watched the Six Nations with interest.

I was impressed with what I saw from the likes of Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell, Elliot Daly, Jonathan Davies and Stuart Hogg to name only a few. Yet, let's be honest, they get written off because they are playing in a competition we don't rate.

There's no way Farrell could match Beauden Barrett, and you just wait till Itoje runs into Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick. He won't know what's hit him. Nope, that's not what happened.

Before the tour started, sports talkback hosts and print columnists were proclaiming we could suffer multiple injuries and we would still be too good for this lot. We are New Zealand rugby and we have the depth of the Pacific Ocean in rugby talent they said.

Well, we suffered injuries and a suspension and what do you know? We weren't good enough to claim series honours.

We have become so insular that we think the only thing that matters is us, and that reflects in the media's coverage of the Lions before and during the tour.

    3. We warned you it was the tour schedule from hell and they would be lucky to win more than two games.

Okay, so they only won five, but look at the games they did win - Crusaders, Maori All Blacks and the second Test. Those were the games that were supposed to be an embarrassment for the tourists.

A full-strength Crusaders outfit didn't fire a shot and neither did the New Zealand Maori, yet still the Lions were written off. It was apparently the referee's fault and the fact that the Maori had only been in camp for four days.

That's fine, but where was that argument for the Lions after they had struggled to put away the Barbarians? They had only been in the country for 40-odd hours.

I remember sitting in the office at work and overhearing banter they wouldn't win another game and the All Blacks would smash them by 40.

Talkback radio lit up with callers proclaiming the Lions a joke and Gatland clueless, without retort from hosts either, just cheerleading and talk of a series whitewash for the world champions.

The schedule was tough, but this squad was full of quality that could easily compete at Super Rugby level. I'm pretty sure the Blues would jump at the chance to recruit a guy like Dan Biggar, let alone Johnny Sexton.

Sean O'Brien, Jamie George, Anthony Watson, Leigh Halfpenny, even mid-weeker James Haskell was great with the Highlanders a few years back. Who are we kidding? These guys would walk into most New Zealand franchises as starters.

We got this wrong and we failed you, the rugby public, by giving you a false sense of security that this All Black team would send Gats and his boys back home in tears.

    Sorry New Zealand

The worst bit is that they didn't actually lose the game everyone is up in arms about!

cannot, absolutely cannot wait until someone starts beating them regularly. they've spent 15 years banging on about how poor every other team is in defeat. tables will turn eventually.

I feel sorry for the kids who have grown up never seeing the ABs lose. They wont be ready for it, and the people who are meant to teach them that you cant win everything all the time are going to be just so unprepared to handle it themselves, let alone use it as a teachable moment for the kids. (also - when did i start getting old and thinking about this kind of thing)

Every day it is a penalty, the hooker knew it Kieran Read knew it. When are they going to throw George Ayoub out with the rubbish, the guy is a menace.

Pretty sure Ayoub agreed with the penalty. Then the ref changed that decision when coming back to the mark.

From the audio it would seem that it is Jerome Garces who spoke to Poite (Hear him saying 'Oui Jerome' to raise something with him which we could not hear and led to Poite changing his mind.

After the 1987 World cup I remember reading a piece in a Rugby Magazine (don't recall which one). The article opened with something along the lines of.
"We have been surprised by two things from the World Cup. 1/ The massive gulf between the "minnow" nations and the top tier nations. 2/ New Zealand commentary, media and crowds are incredibly biased".

I guess one of those things has changed?

would it be the fact that a rugby magazine in 1987 had the guts to print that?

    Certainly wouldn't happen today.
