Does this pave the way for a Brumbies Rebels merger?

ARU left stunned as Rob Clarke, who is seen as heir apparent to CEO Bill Pulver, tenders resignation

SENIOR Australian rugby executive Rob Clarke, a man seen as the next chief executive of the ARU, has stunned colleagues by resigning his post.

Clarke told staff on Wednesday he was stepping down as the ARU’s chief operating officer after a decade in rugby administration.

An ARU spokesman confirmed Clarke had tendered his resignation.

The former Brumbies and Rebels CEO has served as deputy to chief executive Bill Pulver at the ARU for the last two years, and was tipped by many to assume the CEO role when Pulver moved on, potentially later this year.

Already under pressure to keep his job based on the ugly mess surrounding the cutting of a Super Rugby team, Pulver will now come under even more pressure with Clarke no longer at his side.

Clarke recently responded to criticism over his involvement in the ARU’s process of deciding whether the Western Force or the Melbourne Rebels would be cut.

After the Brumbies were removed from the “under threat” list, Clarke’s previous connection to the Brumbies was questioned by WA Rugby figures.

It is not known when or if the ARU will replace Clarke as COO.

News Corp Australia recently reported Clarke has been targeted by Sailing Australia to take over as chief executive of their organisation, replacing another former ARU deputy Matt Carroll.

Maybe the reasons will become clear, maybe not.

But if I were a betting man - and I am - I'd bet overconfidence in his ability to pull off the Force axing with dodgy modelling caught him out.

I'd double down on his being the "ARU staffer" who assured the Rebels they were in the clear without the authority to do so as well.

Good point, to avoid being called a liar from both his connections after the ARU changes their mind he is falling on his sword after fighting to keep them.

If you are a Brumbies board member you might be a bit worried if your biggest supporter in the ARU suddenly quits.
I mean if Stooke resigned I'd be more than a little worried. So I imagine the Brumbies and to an extent the Rebels are a little anxious.

I see Clyne is blaming Papworth, Dwyer & Co for this course of action. Stating their intervention last year was "the main catalyst" for cutting a team - in an interview with Wayne Smith. FFS - have some backbone.

If you run into the pay wall just type ARU into Google. That's how I saw it.

Well it's interesting, I asked someone who works at the Force if they were still out job-hunting.
Their response was intriguing, "Nah, I've actually stopped looking for now,'cos it looks likely the Rebels and Brumbies are gonna merge"

So I wonder if the staff were put on notice there's life in the old dog yet?

Clarke intends to hang around like a fart in a telephone box until June, according to a Newscorpse article in the Australian.

Do the Force employ many people with such limited ability to speak English, Chibi?
