FLAGS around the State should be at half-mast today because we have lost a great West Aussie ó Bozo the lorikeet.

Now, we donít usually write eulogies for pets but there was nothing normal about Bozo, the beloved feathered friend of champion boxer Danny Green, his wife, Nina, and two kids, Chloe and Archie.

Bozo was named one of WAís pets of the year in the 2014 Inside Cover Awards after the parrot led the Green Machine on a wild-goose chase.

The champ had been cleaning Bozoís cage when he noticed the bird had vanished.

A search of the house failed to produce results and the thought of being responsible for Bozo flying the coop had the pugilist petrified.

ďIíd rather get in the ring with Mike Tyson than face the kids if I lost him, Ē Green told IC at the time.

Green set off around the neighbourhood, with the other family pet ó a chihuahua named Buster ó under one arm.

As well as a penchant for colourful language, Bozo had the ability to mimic a certain whistling sound, so Green looked high and low, jumping fences into the backyards of nearby homes, clutching a chihuahua and whistling as he went.

Thatís something you donít see every day.

A block from home, Green thought he heard a faint whistle and jumped one more fence to find himself in a backyard where a bloke, Greg Hogan, was working on a swimming pool.

And there was Bozo, stuck 10m up a Norfolk Island pine.

Thinking quickly, Green handed the dog to Hogan, climbed on to the roof of the adjacent house then up the tree, and coaxed Bozo into his arms.

Three years later and this plucky parrot is chewing on the Great Cuttlebone in the Sky.

RIP Bozo.
