Anybody who was being realistic saw that game as a dress rehearsal for the Blues, and there were some things going on that would make us quietly confident about this week's game.

Our set piece (in general) held one of the best units in the comp to parity (and put on a clinic in scrummaging IMHO) the only reason that Saders went to dodgy tactics in the scrum was because they weren't able to cope on an even footing. the fact that Hoffman ignored their illegal, dangerous play even in the face of a serious injury resulting from it will surely have the next ref looking at our scrum a bit more favourably.

We held the Saders out for long periods with good scrambling cover defense, the Blues aren't mugs, but they're not the Crusaders either. It's conceivable that we could improve markedly on that result against a team that tries more risky stuff and has a habit of shooting itself in the foot under pressure.

Our two tries came from good Force play (yes I know one was an intercept, but it was a good read by Alex Newsome when Marcel rushed out of the line to pressure the passer that made it happen. We are capable of scoring points in New Zealand and the Blues can get leaky in defense at times.

If we fix a couple of the glaring errors from Saturday I think we have a good chance this week.
Either attack the ball on the floor or hit them with high line speed, you can't mis both of those trains.
keep our eyes up in attack, use the pick 'n' drive when their A defenders are wide, use the short kick or wide pass to beat the rush
Keep ball in hand, or at the very least kick to a contest, all Kiwi teams love to counterattack, particularly against broken Aussie D Lines, don't let them
Win the contact, both with and without the footy.

Ruck Involvements - Crusaders v Force

    Remember:
    1. Early means 1st or 2nd of player’s team AFTER the ball carrier has been tackled and brought to ground.
    2. Impact means active engagement: strong physical contact, changed shape of ruck, clean-out, protecting ball etc. (more than hand on someone’s bum or arriving after the hard work has been done). Yes it’s subjective - but as I collect all data at least it’s consistent.
    3. Impact DOES NOT equate to Effectiveness. I’ve concluded that coming up with an effectiveness measure is just too hard in the time that I have available – but open to suggestions.

This ABs/Crusaders Front Row always show a high level of ruck involvement.
The Force Front Row very subdued particularly after their work rate against the Brumbies.
Lots of work by the Force Back Row. (hoping that Koteka is OK)

Crusaders leaving most of the work slowing down the Force ball to their AB Tight 5.
Force leaving the bulk of D Rucks to Hardwick, Hodgson and Naisarani.
Little involvement from the Force Front Row (starters or replacements).

This is the most passive I have seen the Force with little effort to slow down the Crusader's ball advance.
    60% stand-off the highest I've seen (53 of 88 D Rucks)
When involved >70% involvement was by a single defender (25 of 35 D Rucks).
In only 10 of 88 rucks were there 2 or more Defenders involved.
Not surprisingly there were only 3 Turn Overs Won.

Maybe, but I really hope they don't lose sight of the fact that we have a far worse record against the Blues than the Crusaders. They might occasionally be a little less rigorous in defense, but ours has always struggled far more with them. We kick them any ball, they will rip us apart, always have. Keeping ball in hand and giving them absolutely no space is about the only way we might roll them IMO.

Just back from Un Zud today.

Had an awesome night at this match the other week. Sat right behind all the Crusaders greats Fergie McCormack etc only to get death stars each time we cheered for the boys or offered Hoff some help with his pathetic decisions. This lead to security telling us we needed to have something to eat a half time! Obviously after having just been through two airports and two flights, I was fine for food!
Those Crusaders fans actually have one eye stitched shut. Either way I think they put in a great effort and it was comfort for "some" of the locals to agree that Hoff had a shocker!
