Time for ARU to stop dithering over the Western Force’s future

    Nick Taylor

If Australian Rugby Union boss Bill Pulver and members of the SANZAAR board were coaching a Super rugby team they would be looking for new jobs by now.
When a club, or any other professional organisation, does not perform or bring results those in charge come into the crosshairs.
It is eight months since an independent review suggested changes to Super Rugby yet these guardians of the game have failed to produce a formula for the future.
The season is now four rounds old and still they dither.
If a coach had waited until the season was under way before implementing his game plan he would have been unceremoniously dumped.
SANZAAR has dragged Super Rugby, and in particular the Australian contingent, into a state of turmoil.
The mess should have been fixed in the off-season, instead the Rebels, Brumbies and Force (which is now selling shares to fans), all concerned about their survival, have been treated poorly.
It was not, after all, those teams that wanted the expansion that has produced the shambles.

Hear, hear Nick Taylor, get of your collective arse ARU and tell us what is happening, this procrastination is bullshit, just increasing the uncertainty and tension for the Australian rugby community and, of course, the players.

" Speculation, rumour and half-truths have been allowed to run rife while the lives of those players, coaches, managers and everyone connected to clubs are left on hold.
About 60 players are in limbo after the ARU placed a moratorium on clubs signing non-Wallabies until the debacle has been resolved.
They are the very people that those in charge should be protecting."

Perhaps we should all start calling ARU headquarters to get some answers

    Who is The_Link ?

Well said Mr Taylor this is about the lives of dozens of people, if not more.
Does anyone have a email address for ARU HQ I think we all need to get onto them, maybe send The West comment.
Mr Pulver may not like it but it shows what a shambles SANZAAR is.
Let's show them that we care and want our team.

I return to the "power of veto" thing.

Australia can force the issue by refusing to cut one of it's five teams, but seems to be waiting for South Africa to have the cojones to do it.

The ARU don't have the stones to stand up in the media and say that they believe that the 5 team model that they agreed to is their preferred model and they will use their voting power to ensure that Australia retains 5 teams.

This is the move of jelly-spined administrators who have spent the entirety of their term simply hoping that the organisation will improve by continuing to do exactly the same thing as they've always done.

The lack of leadership is really startgin to piss me off.

The thing is the ARU want to cut a team. They just don't want to be seen to be wanting to cut a team.
They want to be able to say 'it's all out of our hands'

The real question is 'what team do they want to cut'?

The answer is obvious, whichever team will help the Tahs and the Reds the most.

Regardless of the improvement in the Force's on-field I thkn that will be the Brumbies, because nobody from the Shute Shield will want to shlep all the way to Perth to scout talent and therefore they'll see canberra as a fertile field for them to plunder.

where is the ASC in all of this? surely such rampant nepotism and inequity can be dealt with by a regulating authority?

While in previous years I would agree with you, as things stand the ARU and NSWRU aren't really getting on all that well.
The ARU is finally being run with a financial perspective in mind. This being the case I suspect the ones to go will be those that are putting most strain on the finances and delivering the least for that money.
