TWO minutes into the Western Force’s clash with the Queensland Reds on Thursday night a fan came up with some sage advice for his team: “Just get the ball to Chance,” he yelled.
Thirty seconds earlier Chance Peni had exploded onto the international rugby stage, finishing off a spectacular backline move to score one of Super Rugby’s quickest tries.
It wasn’t the fastest ever scored — that belongs to Bryan Habana who scored in just eight seconds for the Stormers against the Cheetahs six years ago — but who was counting?
In a man-of-the match performance Peni carried for more than 100m, beat nine tackles, made three line breaks and should have scored a couple more tries.
It was the sort of performance that would have made Wallabies coach Michael Cheika take notice.
