Thanks guys. When the twitter doesn't mention anything about the opposition, it's hard to judge whether they were trying some stuff that wasn't working, whether they'd put a team of seconds on the Park or whether they were looking to fine tune and get genuine match intensity.

The last hope I have is that the Rebels arent so far behind the rest that a strong performance like that is an indication that we can make it to 17th.

Oh, and we didn't use every tricky back line and set piece move in our playbook to win a game which means nothing and where the opposition might be foxing.

Let's hope "winning is a habit" and the tens works, rolling us into a great first couple of games

well i hope they used a few of them, because without doing so,it is difficult to evaluate them outside a game situation

27-5 final score. Went to the game.
WF - hard to say who played well as at times there were three #9 jerseys on the field (not 3 scrum halves mind you).. What I can say is that the team hit hard in the tackles, line breaked out wide with rona and Peni + DHP and Meakes carving up. And NO kicking in general play.

Rebels - good team on paper with the first half different to the second. They just wanted to play the old school game of bash it thru the middle didn't work and of course the score line showed it.

5 tries to 1 with only he last kick going thru by Ian prior.

If I had a negative Our line outs were a little ordinary, we had Tessman first half and GingerMegs Harry in the 2nd half with TPN alternating between Prop and Hooker.

Coleman ran water, Gus, Marcel,Fauklner on the pine, everyone else had a run in the squad including the light weight jocky Robbie Coleman.

Blood didn't take the team either was left to his assistants tonight.

FORCE DEFEAT REBELS ON THE GOLD COAST

By David Berrie on Mon 6th February 17

The Road Safety Western Force have beaten the Melbourne Rebels 27-5 in their second pre-season trial match at Bond University on the Gold Coast this evening.

The Rebels shot out to score first, but that would be their only major for the rest of the match as the Force piled on five tries to run away with the win.

Head Coach Dave ‘Blood’ Wessels says that while it was a good win, there is still plenty to work on and they will need to play better in order to beat the Waratahs in Round One.

“We left too much out there, we were poor in some of the contact areas and I just had to remind the men that we beat the Hurricanes in pre-season last year and then didn’t win a game for a while.

“We have to go really hard at the opportunities out there and there were plenty of them today, so we have a lot of work to do if we want to beat the Waratahs in Round One.”

Wessels went on to say that there were some impressive players for the Force tonight including new recruit Chance Peni.

“The great thing about Chance is he goes at 100 percent, he really flies into everything. He’s been a great addition to the squad on and off the field, so I’m really pleased for him and he’ll take a lot of confidence out of his performance tonight.”

The Rebels started well, putting the Road Safety Western Force under pressure with quick ball and pressure at the breakdown. They took the early advantage when Chance Peni was shown a yellow card after being deemed offside by the referee and the Melbournians wasted no time with the extra player as big man Steve Cummins crashed over for the opening try of the match. Maddox couldn’t convert, leaving the score at 5-0.

It didn’t take long for the Force to strike back, after a fantastic line from Luke Morahan splitting the Rebels defence, he was brought down just shy of the line and Brynard Stander blasted his way over to finish the good work. Jono Lance couldn’t convert and left the score locked at 5-5.

The Force then placed relentless pressure on the Rebels defence and struck again, through new recruit Bill Meakes, who stepped his way through the Rebels defence and scored his first try in the blue jersey. Lance couldn’t convert, 10-5.

With the match being played in quarters, the Western Force went into the first break with a 10-5 lead and made no changes to their side for the second quarter.

Both sides came out hard in the second quarter, but neither team could break the line with the defensive lines holding strong. It took 14 minutes for the next score, with the Force doing the damage, after a cracking line break from Chance Peni the Force held a scrum on their 22, the ball was then swept out to the right wing with Ryan Louwrens offloading to Peni who stepped through the last line of defence and dotted down his first five-pointer for the Western Force. Lance again couldn’t convert leaving the Force’s lead at 15-5.

It took the Force two minutes to hit the scoreboard after the half time break, with the team putting together some strong phase work before speedster Luke Morahan got the ball out wide and finished beautifully in the right-hand corner. Ian Prior took over the kicking duties, but couldn’t convert, 20-5.

The scoring dried up from there, as neither side could break through the last line of defence, and at the end of the third quarter the Force went into the break with a 15-point lead.

The men from the West once again started with a bang, after a lineout just outside the 22, young Future Force Foundation product James Verity-Amm ran a beautiful line, slicing through the Melbourne defence and then offloading to new signing Alex Newsome who finished under the posts. Ian Prior converted and the Force stretched their lead to 27-5.

That would be the end score line for the match, with the Rebels pushing hard to finish on a high note, controlling the ball in their 22 for the last five minutes of the game, but the Force defence was outstanding, holding the Rebels at bay until the final whistle.

Yeah, it's a bit of a catch 22 these days, with video analysis and such. You really want to have a couple of tricks up your sleeve that nobody knows about, but if you keep them a secret, you can't tell if they will work. I think the secret is in having several variations on a single set up.

Western Force code-hopper Chance Peni stars in 27-5 pre-season win over Melbourne Rebels
    Nick Taylor
    Tuesday, February 07, 2017 8:45AM

Western Force coach Dave Wessels was not getting carried away with his side’s 27-5 pre-season trial win over Melbourne Rebels on the Gold Coast on Monday night.
His side scored five tries to one but Wessels was not happy with the chances that went begging.
“There were a number of good things in the game but we’ve got to be pretty tough on ourselves in terms of the opportunities we left out there,” Wessels said.
“If we had been playing the Waratahs (their round one opponents) and we don’t finish those opportunities we are not going to beat them.
“We have got to be tough on those things, we have to keep our feet on the ground.
“We actually haven’t achieved anything yet. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Code-hopper Chance Peni staked his claim for a spot.
He scored one try and was dangerous on the right wing, beating the Rebels defence with quick footwork.
Wessels said Peni would get better the more he played after his return from rugby league.
“What you want to see is a guy who’s having a full go and Chance absolutely puts his body on the line and tries everything,” he said.
The Force looked the sleeker of the two teams. They conceded the opening try but never looked troubled after that score and held a 15-5 half-time lead.

Any other write ups on the game?

We beat the ponies 'Cannes in a pre-season trial last year and look where that got us.

    update
just read the write up on the force site and it says to me that we need kicking practice and lots of it.

Comparisons with prior years trials are pointless - Trails/Pre season games are there to give the guys 'real' game situations and gain build on their game fitness level. Based on trials it is impossible to predict how well or bad a team will do, but for the coaches it gives them an idea on how well players adapt their philosophy and follow their instructions.

I would rather win the pre season games than lose them.
I'm happier to be in the position of the Force than the Rebels or the Brumbies.
Having been smashed in a pre season game doesn't build a lot of confidence to start the season.
