WALLABIES play maker Matt Giteau is leaving French club Toulon at the end of the season to play in Japan.

Giteau announced the move via his Instagram account on Monday, farewelling the club’s fans in French.

Fox Sports translated the text to read:

“I want to announce that at the end of this season I will leave to play in Japan.

“Making this decision was the toughest of my rugby career but it is the best for my family to be closer to Australia. I want to say a big thank you to the players, (who I have made life long friendship with), coaches, president and staff behind the scenes since 2011. I owe a lot to you.

“I also want to say a big thank you to the supporters Toulonnais who will remain in my heart for life. The time spent in Toulon was the best period of my rugby career. My main goal now is to win titles for this historic club. #ToujoursToulonnais #MerciEncore

The 34-year-old has played 103 Tests for Australia. He broke down during last year’s humiliating record Bledisloe one defeat in Sydney after just 10 minutes and while he’s yet to make an official call on his Test career it’s considered to be all but over.

Giteau, who helped guide Australia to the 2015 World Cup final at inside centre, won three European Champions Cups at Toulon, playing outside Jonny Wilkinson.

Interesting that they call his test career "all but over" I would have thought the move to Japan had a large amount of "play for the wallabies" in it.

Money is on him joining Eddie Jones' old club Suntory Sungoliath - I read Jones had something to do with bringing him over.

Ordinarily I'd say he could do both Japan and Super Rugby, like a number of players do, but not at his age.

    Thanks!
Just seems logical, he's like the third son to Bianca and Giteau - don't see him staying away for too long unless AAC moves to Toulon...
